Subject: Fan Clutch in Cold Weather? IP: Logged
Message: Hey ya'll,
I have a 99 Club Cab with 5.2, Auto, and I do not have the electric fan that comes with many 4.7's. I live in Fargo, ND, and it's about that time when the temp's not going to get above 30. For city driving (yeah, Fargo's a city :) and highway cruising, am I safe taking the fan clutch off and just running no fan, or do you think I would overheat? Anyone actually try this? Thanks!

Message: you should be alright, but a 180 t-stat would definitely be a good backup

Message: I would leave the thermo stat alone. I doubt that you will have any problem with it. The only time a fan really does much for you is when your speeds are below 30MPH. If you install the 180 degree thermo stat you will have problems with closed loop open loop operation of emission systems/ECM in those cold temps. I ran a high performance small block with a 4 core radiator and no fan at all year round and never had any over heating issues. Most of my driveing with that vechile was around town and raceing booth on and off road 4x4. Once spring rolls around I would wire two fans on their one pusher and puller if room permits.

Message: Don't do it. You will overheat eventually if you drive enough. If you only go short trips and keep the heater on you should be ok. But why not add an electric and be safe. I had 2 on my 99 - the stock 4.7 and a slim (don't remember the model off hand but it is sitting in the garage) fan between the condensor and rad.. Never overheated with this setup.
Ps. Fargo is decent size well absolutely huge by ND comparisons.

Message: Thanks for the advise guys. I'll post more when I try something. Yeah, but ND standards Fargo is a wholloping flourishing metropolis.
I like it...cops don't mind a LOUD truck, so that's not half bad. ;)
