Hello, I am putting a 440 in my 88 Dakota.
first of all i would like help from people who have done the swap, not peoples opinions please. i want to know any problems occured in the process. i've looked at the engine swap site and that's cool. i want to know if i need to buy that kit or if i can make my own. i want to know if i need to move that steering shaft or get a smaller booster. all these things i want to know ahead of time. i can weld and fabricate ok i'm not a pro.
thanks
mike

im in the process of droppin in a big block myself. i bought the kit, and would do so again in an instant. i am still workin on mine but so far no real problems. the steering shaft shouldn't need to be moved. as for the booster, you may need a smaller one. my engine fits with some clearance, but my engine is based on the b series block, not the rb.

I have a factory manual that covers '88 Dakotas. That manual has all the wiring diagrams you need. I also have an '88 Dakota and i'm considering smallblock swap or bigblock. I have a turn key 440 (for another project) and a 400 block and crank which of course would need build up.

LET ME KNOW ON THE BOOSTER ISSUE.
I AM PREPARING TO DO THE SAME SWAP AND HAD ALREADY DETERMINED THAT THE BOOSTER WOULD HIT.
SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED ON MID-TO -LATE '70S FULL SIZE TRUCKS WITH THE 440...THEY HAD A SMALLER BOOSTER FROM THE FACTORY.

no you don't need a smaller booster if you set the motor in properly.

thanks for the info !!! i guess it's just a REAL close fit huh ?
are you all using manifolds ? or fabricated headers ?
the v6 in mine is running worse every time i drive it (5000 rpm speed-shifting doesnt help)
so it is almost time to swap the 440.
is anyone still using the facotry a/c compressor?
would like some info on that aspect of the swap if anyone has used any of the pre-existing underhood parts. i have had several smallblock dakotas...this will be my first big block (in a dakota)
thanks
