Subject: Does not start when air temp is cold?? IP: Logged
Message: Guys/Gals,
You've helped me out in the past with advice on replacing the dist shaft bearing,
when she ran really rough. a BIG THANKS.
Now I have another problem.
Since it has gotten cold in the mornings, I can not get my truck to start.
When I get home from work it starts right up.
I did notice the with the cooler weather, (last few weeks) it has been
requiring more cracking time to get started.
Now with the frosty mornings, I can not get it started at all.
It just cranks. I replace the IAC stepper and it did not help any.
Thought it was a 'choke' issue because of temperature.
Any suggestions?
What to check...

Message: if you can read coolant temp with your code reader check the coolant temp sensor may be stuck at an higher temp will not code if its still in range it does affect mixture when its cold

Message: My code reader does not read the direct input from the ECT.
Does the ECT affect the mixture THAT musc on a FI throttle body? i thought the ECT only 'worked' the cooling system.
But I'm willing to get an coolant temp sensor is that is a possibility of my troubles..

Message: Mic, is not that complicated as it seems. All that means is that your battery feels the change in temp and it has a harder time to keep or get charge due to slowing of the chemical reaction inside the cell package. The easy fix for that is have it check at a Wal-mart or Autozone for free and make sure the guy/girl knows what he/she is doing and monitor the time and rate at which the battery charges and discharges. Another quick check is to open the caps and check for water level. if level is low on any of the cells, fill it with club soda. Leave it open and then turn on you truck; check each cell for bubbles if one cell is bubbling small bubbles, you should still be OK! for a couple of months but you going to have to deal with the long cranking. If more than one cell is bubbling, then you need to replace you battery. I hope this helps in your situation.

Message: Pardon my ingnorance, but if I can not get it to start at all when cold/frosty out, and it still crancks pretty good; could it be the battery?
I think I noticed the ASD and fuel pump relays NOT engaging when key on. THey come in when warm, but not in the cold mornings we have been having.
I know the PCM controls the ground to both these relays, but WHY have trouble when cold?
Help Pls...

Message: O.K. so it most likely is not the battery (kindda what I thought)
Checking the fuel pressure with a gauge attached to the schrader test port on the rail, I noticed the fuel pressure low and not increaseing when I have trouble starting it. But when it warms up, and I can start it, the fuel pressure is at 30psi (normal is about 31psi).
looking at the shop manual the PCM controlls the ASD and fuel pump relay grounds. when the relays are grounded at start up I would assume my fuel rail pressure will increase. BUT WHY is the PCM not commanding the ASD and FP relays when the air temp is COLD?

Message: you have power to turn it over so, you need air, fuel and spark, spark is easy to check, make sure the air intake passages are clear, then make sure you are getting fuel ,and the right amount. With the kind of milage you have a faulty fuel pump or clogged filter might be the places to start looking, it neds to run richer when cold, so in the hot summer not as much fuel is needed to get and keep it running. Then again it could be your pcm, a pickup in the distributer or a myraid of other things.

Message: i just put a new fuel pump on about 40K
New fuel filter about 7K, along with new fuel lines (70%) cuz of rust out
air intake ok
plug wires about 20K
plugs about 12K regapped yesterday, looked mostly white/clean very litte carbon
in the after noon...it started up (today) but this morning 5am or so, it would not start. just crank. aaaaargh!!!
I'll look at the cam sensor/pick up coil Friday..
BTW cap and rotor done about 40K or so...

Message: Any ideas why when I turn the 'key on' and pause before I crank it, my ASD and fuel pump relays chatter on & off.
But if I cycle the key on/off/on/off/on (or a few times) it will stop (also pause before crank) chattering and stay on, thus building fuel rail pressure to start.
any one?
