Subject: Transmission Question IP: Logged
Message: Hey there,
I have a 99 CC SLT 5.2 Auto, and when I first take off in the morning and the engine is cold, it seems to stay in 2nd gear for too long. Even with very light throttle pressure, it will hang at about 2600 rpm for about 5 seconds before shifting to 3rd, and then it shifts to 4th pretty quickly.
Is this normal warm-up procedure, or is there something wrong? After a few minutes and it's warm it shifts great. Thanks for your help in advance, I really appreciate it.

Message: The same happens in my 97 with the 44RE. Apparently, some of the tranny fluid drains out of the converter when it has been sitting for awhile (I was under the impression that this would not be the case with our trannies/converters). I have heard that starting it in neutral rather than park is supposed to allow the fluid drain into the converter immediately. I keep forgetting to try this so I can't confirm if it works or not. HTH.

Message: ticats,
I tried starting in Neutral, not much difference. Is there a way to check the fluid level to confirm the drain-back issue?
It really doesn't bother me, the main thing I'm wondering is how it affects the transmission longevity, and if so, what precautions I can take. Thanks to everyone on this board for the help, you guys rock!

Message: First thing I would do is check the fluid. If it is not synthetic change to synthetic. I would also check the trans temp sensor.

Message: I have the same problem in my 93 dakota. I asked my local Dodge dealer what the deal was and they said there is nothing wrong, thats the way they're made. It is a heat sensor that doesn't allow it to shift until it reaches a certain temperature. Some Toyota's do it too!! Hope i helped!!!

Message: Read all about my 1996 transmission problems in my 12/18/02 message posting. Ours started slipping recently (automatic and now out of warranty). Took it in, and shop couldn't find any problems. Doesn't slip for now, but with all of the other problems we've had with this turd, I'm not holding my breath! Good luck!

Message: It's normal for it to shift funny when it's below 40 deg F +/- 5 deg
The shift kit rocks but, it wont help when it's cold. In fact it hits like a concrete truck just nailed you in the ass on the 1st to 2nd shift and hang in second.
Letting it warm up, nutral does include more parts then being in park.

Message: I have a 2002 club cab believe a 45rfe or something to that effect. EyeTrip is exactly right. Below 40degrees sounds like when mine acts up. I let it warm up 15 minutes pull out of my driveway and my tach is leaning towards 1600-1800rpms and I'm barely inching forward. When it eventually hits second all is well after that! Sure am GLAD I don't have to pull into traffic right off the bat!!!

Message: Nice try Dr. D-
These new mopar transmissions will act up in cooler temperatures irregardless of what manufacturer's fluid you have in them. They are engineered to wait until the fluid reaches a certain temp (via a temp controlled switch)before they will change gears. When the outside temp is above 40 the fluid is already warm enough at start-up.

Message: I would like to let everyone know that if they have problems with thier trucks while under warranty and the dealer fails to fix it properly; after the third try you truck could be covered by the lemon laws. I learned the hard way. I made many trips to the dealer to fix a sloppy transmission shift problem while the truck was still under the factory warranty. I was never fixed properly. Now with 65K on the the truck, the sloppy shift has grown to 2nd gear complety gone - slips like hell.
The result - the dealer says it will cost $2500.00 to fix it! What the @#$%^$#! Stick to your guns if you have a problem which is covered under warranty! Call the Chrysler Care number and pinch a fit! Or else....
