Subject: 4.7L intake test IP: Logged
Message: Just for the heck of it I tried something. My intake is stock. Inside the stock air-hat there is an air baffle/chamber in the air flow tube right before the air goes into the throttle body. If memory serves me correct that chamber is there in order to help keep intake noise down, which would make sense due to numerous posts I have read concerning aftermarket intakes and homebrews sounding louder(not the only reason). I figured if the chamber was blocked off the engine would get a little more direct air so I tried this:
I taped off the hole leading to the chamber and then drove the truck for a few weeks to see what would happen.
First, there definetly was no increase or decrease in power felt.
Second, MPG varied from the same as I was getting before (15.2 avg/tank) to slightly less. The last two tank fulls I noticed I didn't even get to 200 miles at 1/2 tank, only about 185.
I drove like I always do; cruising on highway around 70, punch it when needed (slow people{55mph or less} in the left lane should be shot), some around town.
I will be removing the tape this week. I wasn't expecting any big improvement in MPG, just was curious to see what would have happened. Just wanted to share this with everyone.

Message: DoubleD, I probably have put at least 1000 miles on the test so far and it is learning to get worse.

Message: correct me if im wrong (and i may be), but i thought all the restriction in the intake was in all the crap before the air hat. the air filter box i thought didnt let enough air in, and the accordian tubing didnt allow smooth flow? i could be wrong....here's what i know:
after putting 360 intake on truck i got nothing but sound (which i liked) and perhaps a little more pull at high rpm......
after adding exhaust to that package i havent averaged below 18mpg's (mixed, with an occasional heavy foot) from i've learned the 4.7 is a package deal...you need balance (inhaling and exhaling) to accomplish something.
my 2 cents worth
I'd go crazy if I cared!

Message: mills, you are probably right about air flow before the airhat. I was trying an experiment just for the heck of it. I do remember reading in some post somewhere here that the air baffles in the air hat were restrictive and they are there to quiet down the flow of intake air and I figured I try closing it off and see if it really made a difference in sound and maybe MPG. I seem to remember a member here talking about the air quieting effect but I am definetly not positive about that and don't feel like doing a search to verify it. Like I said, just an experiment and I wanted to share my results with everyone.
