Subject: Headers???? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 91 R/C dak 2wd with the 5.2L engine and A500 auto with 97,000mi. My manifolds are cracking and i would like to swap to headers. I am wondering what the gains would be such as hp mpg torque. I wondered if i would loose any of my low end or if it would inprove. I am going to have a custom Y-pipe built for it but dont know what size of pipe to run. I have 2.5" right now and am planing on running the stuff i have on it for know but will eventually replace the cat and muffler. I am looking at getting full length hooker's. If there is a difference between the full and the shorty headers that would be helpful. I am also doing this as a go fast mod thanks
91 R/C 2wd
A500 auto
5.9L Throttle body
K&N filter
Forced air intake
3.55 limited slip

Message: Hooker makes stock replacement shorties that'll bolt to your cat in the stock location. They also make super comp headers for your truck for max power but require a custom exhaust(www.carparts.com).
If you stay with long 4 into 1 and tri-y's you will gain in everything. The only loses of torque I have read was from shortie headers with large dia. primaries. I think any thing is better than your stock manifolds, especially if your going to do mods like gears, cam, RR, etc.)
Good Luck

Message: Tri-y headers are headers that join none adjacent cylinders into 2 seperate pipes, than joins these pipes into one collector. This staged joining of pipes helps low rpm cylinder scavenging. In doing this the headers broaden and maximize low to mid range power(TORQUE). They are harder to make and cost a little more than shorties and are only offered from limited companies(Doug Thorley and MPP).

Message: So would the tri-Y's or the full length headers be better? also would it be alot louder in the cab even with stock exhaust?

Message: Which one is better depends on a couple things:
1)Are tri-y headers available for your truck? I seen on Doug Thorley site that they make headers for the ram with a 318 in your year.
2)What do you want to do with your truck? Drag race it? Are you going to use it as a street/strip vehicle? The full lengths will be the best max hp choice for drag racing. Tri-y headers can still get you into the 13's NA and 11's with nos or a supercharger with no problem.
3) What type of pods. do you see doing to your truck in the future? If your looking for power mainly below 3500 rpms the tri-ys are better than the full lengths. Above 3500 full lengths will make more power than the tri-ys.
4)If you want to use the stock exhaust/location tri-ys or shorties are the way to go. If not, I would go with the full lengths.
5)If your worried about your mpg you want the tri-ys. The reason for this is low rpm's+a little mods= better mpg than the full length's high rpm/a lot of mods benefits.
In general with the stock exhaust the sound would be the same between the two, slightly louder/deeper than stock. The large/dual/no exhaust that the fulls were designed mainly for, is alot louder.

Message: Ok the mods i would like to do when i have the money are S/C change the rear gears to 3.92 or 4.10 mild cam Flow master 50 series suv muffler high flow cat roller rockers and lifters electric fan
I have on it currently a K&N fliter the restrictor plate removed and a 5.9L throttle body with the stock 318 injectors.
I would like to use it for street strip but i also use it as an every day driver so i do have to worry about mpg i dont really care if the exhaust is in the stock location I would really like it to be able to hang with or beat my frineds 96 GT and alot of the pontiacs around here. thanks for your help

Message: From what you just said I would go with the full length headers. If your thinking of getting a supercharger I would go with the 3.92. It will help you from just spinning the tires and not going anywhere. The 3.92 gears will also run about 200 rpm's lower at 60mph, better for mpg.
