Message: Just read a little about the new 4Runner that is due out for '03. I noticed that they have introduced a new V6 that actually has more horsepower than their V8, but they are now available w/ a V8. Does this mean that there will finally be some competition for the Dakota?? Possibly the Tacoma will get the new V6 or maybe the V8, or maybe both. New 4.0L V6 rated at 245hp, and 285ftlbs torque, 10 more hp than the 4.8 Toyota has, but 50ftlbs less torque. And the 4Runner is bigger/wider, maybe the Tacoma will follow and there will be another mid-sized truck to play with on the streets.

Message: I saw that. It's about damn time the 4-Runner got some balls to it. 4-Runner's are not exactly light though, they really need all the power they can get. Toyota doesn't even allow the largest engine available upgrade for their regular cab models. I highly doubt they will move to doing anything like that anytime soon.

Message: While the 4 runner is all new for 2003 the Tacoma is pretty much unchanged for 2003. The Tacoma is all but forgotten in the Toyota truck line when it comes to power, even the minivan gets more! (210hp) They are going to have to keep slapping aftermarket superchargers on and calling them "factory" to keep up with Dakotas.

Message: Ya that 4.0 V6 HP output is target to beat GM's 4.2 I6. The V6 makes less torque then the 4.7 V8. Either way it is about time. I happen to own a 1986 4Runner with an I4. It is ultra reliable but it is also a dog. It has no balls at all.

Message: Before I got my truck I borrowed my parent's old 90 4-Runner often. The thing still looks like new, no one has any clue it's a 90. Totally reliable and holds up well, but it's power is pathetic. This has the V6 I mind you. I bet the new ones are probably pretty fun to drive, but it's not AWD -- like the Jeeps have. If they had an AWD system I think it would be a better competitor.
I just checked their site and they do not offer the V8 with a 5spd manual, just auto. Kind of like their 4WD Matrix, it only comes in auto too.

Message: Well the HP and Torque are almost equal but they did bias the motor a bit more towards HP for marketing numbers I am sure. It would be hard to make a 4.0L V6 that did not offer low end torque. I belive that like most Toyota motors that 80% of what ever torque they produce is usaly available well below 3000 RPM's. I think thaqt the article said that 3/4 of it's torque was availble at 1500 RPM's. I do not have the article in front of me so I am just trying to remember. I am just glad they have made a larger more powerful vechile. Are they going to be building these in Indiana as well?

Message: Don't have your heart set on it, they will not put an 8 in the Tacoma unless it got bigger. Hell, they wont even put the 6 in a regular cab Tacoma! They havn't done that since mid-90s. That was one of the things that turned me away from their vehicles.

Message: I just recently purchased a 2003 dakota to replace my '92 Toyota SR5 V6 with 165K. I needed a truck which would reliably pull my 21' cuddy cab 5.7L boat. The Toyota really did not enjoy this chore.
My search for vehicles led me to the Dodge and the Toyota. I did not want a full size truck and Toyota did not offer a V8. Needless to say, the Dodge was my choice. I have not purchased a new American can since I bought my Mustang GT in '87. Anyway, I have high hopes for my new Dodge.
I strongly agree with other posters in that the Toyota is rock solid reliable. I have been most pleased with Toyota.

Message: The most insane I ever saw was a guy trying to tow a 21' Sea Ray with an '83-'84 Mustang GT!
That boat and trailer combo must have been at least 5 times the recommended towing weight, and four times the recommended maximum tongue weight capacity of the darn thing.
My '99 Dak CC 5.2 auto, hauls my 21 foot Mako center console around, just fine.

Message: Nice boat, Hurl.
One, thing, though...if you tow any distance, I'd suggest that you upgrade to a twin axle trailer. Especially, for a boat of that size and weight.

Message: I only towed the boat to and from the boat launch (12 mi each way). The Toyota cried the whole way. Yes, the boat grossly exceeded the max towing weight of the Toy (hence the '03 Dak). You'd be surprised how light the tongue weight is (approx 220 lb). The single axle came with the boat when new, the fore/aft balance is perfect. The trailer has the huge axle with the six lug wheels.
This year has yielded a new Mercruiser 5.7L, new full canvas w/camper back and cruise curtians and the Dakota. I think a new trailer will have to wait ;)

Message: Yes, that is a light tongue weight.
To maintain proper balance the rule-of-thumb is generally to have a tongue weight of 10% of the combined trailer/boat weight.
I'm sure that my 21 foot Mako, sans OB at present, on it's 5,000 lb Load-Rite twin axle trailer, weighs just over 3,000 lbs with an empty fuel tank (otherwise we would add 86 gallons at 6 lbs per gal, or 516 lbs).
I would swear that it's tongue weight is all of 300 lbs!
