Subject: Removed 3rd cat and emissions
IP: Logged

Message:
I have decided that the 3rd cat on my 2001 4.7 has to come off. Before I put a straight pipe on there I need to know if my truck will still pass emissions alright? I am also installing those 3923's spark plugs too, is there any thing I need to know about those as well?

Thanks,

No way it passes without the cat. Someone here had the straight pipe and the cat flanged so they could change it out when they were going to get tested. You might look into something like that.

Whether is passes emissions, they also do a visual of the emissions system. If they can tell you've removed a cat, I think there's a law about that.

A emissions tech has posted before, maybe they'll chime in here.

I seem to remember something about it being illegal to tamper w/ emmisions equipment, and that even swapping a cat is illegal unless it's damaged. Though if you happened to have a "rock" "accidentally" hit it and damage it, and replaced it with a higher flowing cat I could see that happening :)

It's just a government scare tactic in reality. There is no citation that can be issued by any city/county/state police department that can penalize you for removing the third cat. On the other hand, the EPA can assess a fine to the shop that removed the cat, and fine the worker/s individually. Kinda screwy if you ask me.

i have removed my third cat, when i was in MD, i took an emissions test and actually did better without it. it only cost me $40 to have it cut and replaced with straight pipe. you cannot get into trouble cause the third cat has NO O2 sensor in it.

Something else that can be done is to take the cat off, hollow it out, and then put it back on. Then it will pass visual inspection and likely the sniffer tests if it is tuned well. A shop would rarely touch anything around the cat unless they were replacing it completely, they are more likely to face a fine for something like this then a regular Joe would.

I actually removed my 3rd Cat last week. I put the wheels on ramps and just cut it off on both ends. I ran with straight headers and pre-cats for about a day (DAMN DID IT SOUND GOOD) then took it to an exhaust shop and told him i wanted a straight pipe. He said 30 bucks should do it. I handed him 30 bucks and about 20 minutes later I had the straight pipe welded on. If i pass emissions in two years, I pass, if not, oh well, it sounds good so it was worth it.

Demon Dak you are very wrong about your comment about no penalty, the states that have been forced by the Federal EPA to pass laws requireing an annual emissions test, testing sites must not give you the piece of paper that the states with those tests require that the owner of the vehicle must possess and have properly dated to present to the local vehicle registrar. Meaning that if you don't pass the test, you don't get the liscence plates. I am aware of one state that requires the vehicle to not be allowed back onto the road immediately, which means that the testing place impounds your vehicle and then holds it in ransome until the owner pays them to repair it so it can pass emissions test. Its really quite a racket but that is what goes on out there. Heck in Pennsylvania if your vehicle body has a rust hole it it big enough to pass a quarter through it, The police or registrar can immediately impound the car/truck as unsafe and force you to either repair it or junk it. That one has been on the books for almost 20 years. The belief is that if you let your veicle go to rust, there must be saftey things that you let go bad with it. The thing has to be fully inspected ans certified before you can get plates. Now with laws that that in mind, do you want to give the state you live in the vehicle you just paid $25,00 for and owe the bank on? BTW the bank wants its money and WILL get it from you.

streetguy,

Sorry bud, but you're wrong about your information for the state of Georgia and the Southeastern United States.. Hell, most of the counties here in GA don't require a smog test anyway, and even if you live in one that does, you have 3 years you can run without the third cat because they give new cars a 3 year lee-way. Some states might be more strict, but I don't live in any of those states. As a matter of fact, check out several of the southeastern states and you'll notice very light if any emmisions laws, period. I've done my research on the laws and regions (particularly the SE), and this is the way it is. Sorry you live in a place where the government can tell you what to drive and how to drive it. Next time I'll make sure to post the state I live in for those who don't frequent this board more often. That way it'll avoid confusion.

We used to have an 89'Mustang and it passed without the cats. It origionaly came with 4 cats. The only thing was it wouldn't pass with the motor cold, you had to run it hard and then take it and it would pass with flying colors.

I know it's not a Dakota but it's the best I could do..........

Good luck

Where I live (at the end of the country in south texas)most muffler shops will cut the cat or cats no questions asked. There is also lots of pops & moms certified emmision inspection places where all they do is to take your vehicle for a spin, check your headlights and DONE!! you get your inspection sticker; some won't even ask you for car insurance.

Cats are on there for a reason. I live on a farm and we have equipment that doesn't get washed too often, and it gets a black build up on it. what is from? the rain. Personally i would enjoy a non acidic rain, and smaller holes in the ozone. if you want your truck to be louder, take the muffler off, or buy a louder one. but please dont poison the rest of us.

We have a dairy farm and grow corn, alfalfa, broome grass, and rye. The majority of the chemicals are used on the corn. when we plant we use liquid fertilizer, which is mainly nitrogen, and is injected into the ground. about a month after planting, we spray nitrogen on the corn again. I'm not sure what pesiticdes and herbicides we use other than roundup. We hire an ag service to spray, i'm not part of those decisions, and don't ask about it. however, i will be learning more about it in the next few years at Cornell University. But you do have me Demon Dakota, i cannot prove what that black buildup is, i made an assumption, making an ass out of mostly me. But my opinion remains the same, cats are installed on vehicles for a reason.

FredDQC, you must be from a different area than i am, we have not had poisioning issues which you seem to be referring about. however, i would enjoy it if you could give me some information on it.

Well I've just passed emmision WITHOUT the third cat here in GA (Gwinnett County to be particular), so I guess those precats must do more for the emmission controls that we thought! I didn't think that it would be possible, be we must be lower or less strict on the test outcomes here in Georgia. Kick Ass! I didn't have to have emmisions done, but my friend runs a shop locally. This brings to mind some more things I can do to my truck without totally sacrificing emmision control!

Here in Tennessee, Memphis to be exact, all they do is stick a tube in your taipipe and it reads the percentage of gases your vehicle puts out. Then they ask you to turn on your headlights, parking brake, wipers, yadda yadda yadda. I plan on gutting my cats, soon. So I'm just gonna "relocate" my home address to where it proves that i live at a friends house out in the country where I dont have to worry about this stupid emissions b.s.

I've been thinkin about removing the third cat also, so I asked a couple of the guys who do the emmisions test at a oil and lube shop and they said that the way they make vehicles now a days you could run with no cats and still pass. It would be so loud though. Then at the exhaust shop the guy started tripping out. He was going off about the laws regarding cat removal and said it wouldn't pass.?

Mine is a 00'Dak with only one cat. For those with three cats, how does it really benefit to remove the third one, if flow is restricted on the first two?. Also How can that affect emmissions critically to NOT pass the test if you still have two cats left to burn the gases?

P.S. just wondering

Well if it burned enough gases with two cats would they go through the trouble and expense to put a third on? I took mine off,,for a day, and yes it did make a BIG difference in my 4.7, sound wise it was much louder, even with other two cats on. I am running MagnaFlow, there was a clear difference in the way the computer read and delivered because of loss of backpressure. It threw the air/fuel mix way off. Apparently it takes a couple hundred miles for the system to adjust to the new flow which I found out after I had it put back on. I am going Carsound Hi-Flow and leaving it alone.
