Subject: Cold start oil pressure IP: Logged
Message: 2002 QC 4.7L auto
I recently changed the oil and filter at 1200 total miles. On a cold start, the oil pressure takes about 2 to 3 seconds to spring to life and occasionally the Check Gauges light will flash (almost flicker) on right before the neelde moves. I hadn't noticed this before changing the oil, but I really have to watch carefully to see it. I swapped the filter out with a Mobil 1 filter and that might have decreased the delay slightly. Is this normal or is the engine being deprived of oil at startup?!? I don't see this amount of delay when the engine is warm. There is no code being reported.
BTW, I used Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic, but I assume synthetic would only decrease the delay, not make the problem worse.

Message: More than likly it is your Oil Pressure Sending Unit that is bad from the factory. I would take it back to the Dealer and tell them what it is doing.

Message: it could be that it takes 1-3 seconds for the sending unit to get oil. and until it does the guage wont read any pressure. your engine is fine. just because the guage says you dont have pressure for about 1-3 seconds on cold start up doesnt mean the rest of the motor isnt getting any oil. your motor is fine.
if it gets real bad then just take the truck in and get a new sending unit.

Message: It is normaly for it to take a few seconds to build up pressure. Idealy you want positive oil preasure within a few seconds and normal oil pressure in under 30 seconds.

Message: I personally believe that 5w30 Mobil 1 is to thin. 10w30 or if you live in hot climate 15w50, should work better. That could help your problem. Just my opinion.
