Subject: Mysterious noise IP: Logged
Message: I drive a 98 5.2L 4x4 Dakota, with a noise that I can't figure out and niether can the dealership. The best way that I can describe it is that it sounds like something between an exhaust leak and a engine ping. Laying underneath the truck it sounds like it is coming right from where the two pipes meet in the "Y". The dealer replaced the manifolds, Y pipe and cat, but no change in the noise. They just gave up pretty much. A Dodge Tech said it was normal exhaust noise resinating in the pipes. I can see that, but this noise seems to be louder than "normal," I mean I hate to get on it at the lights beacause it sounds like crap. Can anyone help me out on this one.
Thanks

Message: I've got the same noise... replaced the cat but it's still there. Seems to get worse in colder weather.

Message: The dealer couldn't really tell where the noise was comming from. They thought it was the cat but guess they were wrong. The next step was to replace the Y pipe but I never brought it back. I've been living with the problem for 5 years now.

Message: Well the new Y pipe didn't change a thing on mine. The only thing that comes to mind that might be causing it is that the Y pipe is too small and the exhaust gets backed up and starts to resonate in the pipe causing the noise. Thats the only thing that I can think of, beings my whole exhaust system has been replaced and there are no problems with my engine. I don't know if this idea is way out of line or not, but right now its all I got. I want to find another Dakota 5.2L and listen too it, but I haven't come across one yet. So far you are the only one that I have heard of having the same noise.

Message: If it was normal then there would be more complaints. It sounds like a piece of junk...
Anybody else have this problem with their 5.2?

Message: try checking the heat tubes. they are a little varmint that goes from the passenger side exhaust to the intake. like the 426 hemi tubes these animals have a rough life and can make a goofy exhaust leak-lifter like sound. I replaced mine, problem fixed. also if you replace the intake-plenum gasket it will probably quit burning oil. have a nice day.

Message: I also have a noise with my 5.2. I havent had the truck for very long so the first time that I drove it to get it good and hot I started to notice it at idle and low rpm. I thought it was a bottom end noise like a bearing. I don't have a problem with oil pressure hot or cold. Funny thing i can only hear it while in the cab listening closely in the direction of the firewall. I had a mechanic check it out with a headset and transmitter used to spot engine noise but he said that internally the engine is very quiet. He seems to think that it is just a resonating exhaust type thing. I really don't know what it is yet but I'm still listening.

Message: I had this same noise when I put my headers on, it turned out to be a bolt on the passengers side firewall that holds one of the heat shields on. When my engine was cold it would shake enough to make the header hit up against this bolt. Just a thought.

Message: cobra090, what you are describing sounds like your EVAP purge solenoid. The solenoid is mounted by a rubber bracket just left of the master cylinder. Next time you hear the sound grab the solenoid and see if it stops. If you rev the engine a little the knock should stay the same.

Message: 98dak4X4, I checked out the Evap purge solenoid like you said and the noise does seem to be comming from there. It makes no noise at all when cold but starts to make noise as it warms up. I can hear it under the hood only by placing a hammer handle to my ear and then touching the other end to the solenoid. The noise does increase in porportion to the engine rpm.I can also feel it pulsating when I grab it also it does not stop when I do this. Is this something that would affect my gas mileage and should it be replaced? I can live with the noise in the cab if it will not hurt anything to leave it as is. Thanks in advance for any additional info.

Message: I think what you are describing is normal operation. If it bothers you try replacing the rubber piece on the bracket. For some reason it seems to resonate through the fire wall even though it's rubber. Mine has been making that sound for about 5 years. Seems to only make the sound when it's cold outside but the engine compartment is nice and warm.

Message: 98Dak4X4, I think I can live with the noise, not really that big of a deal when compared to thinking that it might be something that needs immediate attention. I probably would not have found it without your help. Thanks again.
