Subject: Engine Roar on startup? IP: Logged
Message: Mabey 10 times since I've owned the truck, when I start up the engine and press the gas pedal the engine is loud like a roaring sound. It does this as I slowly take off thru the parking lot and until I get out on the street and accelerate up to the speed limit. Weather plays no part.
Anyone ever experienced this?
2001 4.7 Auto 2wd 25,000
Thanks.

Message: I talked to the dealer that I've always dealt with and it's normal. Apparently it's a fan forcing air into the engine faster to help the engine get up to temperature faster. It's supposed to be on for approx. 40seconds at start up. He said all the v8's in the Dodge Line up will do it.

Message: Fe_Ring,
Did the dealer say what conditions must exist for the fan to do that? It happens so infrequently?
I've had it happen in cold and warm weather, and with rain. Like I said, mabey 10 times in 25,000 miles.

Message: Noah, your fan diagnosis is wrong. If the engine ran properly, you wouldn't have the "fan" problem. The engine "roar" isn't the fan. Go to the dealer.

Message: The fan clutch only comes into play if the fan belt is loose. It probably squeeks bad. You need to have the timing chain replaces ASAP.

Message: Okay... I really didnt' want to have to explain this whole damn thing, but now that there's BS floating thru the air, I guess I have to explain it.
The radiator fan on the Dodge trucks is coupled to the engine with a viscous clutch unit. This allows the fan to "slip" and not turn as fast as the engine's rpm at all times. Otherwise it would roar liek that all day every day. This helps you get better mileage and keeps things quiet.
But overnight, the fluid in the clutch unit leaks into the passages in the unit that cause the clutch to lock up. So, until the fluid warms up in the morning and seeps back into the passages that make the clutch disengage, the fan is spinning at the same speed as the engine. It makes a loud roar. Once the fluid seeps back into the correct passages (usually only takes a second or two in the morning), it disengages and the fan is once again turning, but not at the saem speed as the engine.
The only other time you will get this roar is when the air temperatures are insanely hot in the dead of summer when it's 100+ degrees outside. These temps cause the fluid in the clutch to lock the unit up and spin the fan up to the speed of the engine and it roars in the middle of summer.
It's just the viscous clutch on the radiator fan doing its job properly.
It is normal. Noah, relax. It's okay.
The rest of you morons, shut the F up.

Message: My 05 Dakota V8, QC, Auto, 3.92 does the exact same thing, usually when the truck has been sitting over night. But not always. Maybe 2 or 3 times in a week.
The roaring sound usually goes away (fan clutch dissengages) by the time I accelerate and the trans shifts into second.
Truck runs great, happy customer.

Message: My 4.7 initially didn't have the "roar" when first starting, then when I went to tow my boat it started to overheat upon completing a trip. Found out it was the fan clutch, when fixed I got the "roar" and the fan clutch was working. Just recently, noticed the "roar" gone, found it to be the fan again... On mine, as long as I hear that "roar" upon start up I know the fan is operating properly- and cooler..
