Texas Todd: Five forward gears with a alternate second that is only used for downshifting to pass someone.
Look at his post again.

1st > 3:1
2nd > 1.67:1
3rd > 1:1
4th > .75:1
5th > .67:1

2nd prime > 1.5:1".
The first five are used sequentially and this ^ is still a alternate second gear.

There is second and a second prime or alternative second gear. I am really getting tired of explaining this in the same post over and over again. Count the forward gears.

CW is correct.

Basically there are six forward gears but the 2nd alternate gear is only used for the 4th to 2nd downshift because of the clutch problem dctech described.

CW, a while back, you said that there was a possible 8 foward and 3 reverse gears because of the 3 planetary gear sets, correct??? The gears picked are really only decided by the pcm, correct?

Yes that is correct. I could be wrong on the exact number beacuse I am having trouble remebering how to calculate the ratios. Been a while since I took planetary gear sets in tech school. They don't use all the ratios because they are just rediculous O/D and U/D.

Texas Todd: Sorry if I came across harsh, poor mood.

handi2, You may be mistaking the clutch lock-up in 4th as a fifth shift. The RPM's drop a couple hundred when the lock-up occurs.

Fast Eddie is correct. The 45RFE has 4 forward gears with torque converter lock-up available in 3rd and 4th gears. The shifts you should be experiencing are: 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4. Once in 4th gear the torque converter can lock-up causing about a 300 RPM drop. This gives the impression of a 4-5 shift, but really isn't.
