New rims will be here soon. I'm buyin the 16x8's Bill has for sale. So what kind of traction should I put on there for good street launches. Right now i've got 15x7's with 235/60-15's or somethin like that. I've got the 4.7L and 3.92's and i'm so damn tired of not being able to hook up right. Suggestions?

275/60R16 scorpions will make that bad boy hook. Think I will go to that size when I wear out the 255/65R16 stockers. Should only take 6-7k miles.

Are they very expensive? What about the front end? Was adjusting your TPS hard to do by the way? I just don't want to screw anything up.

Yes they are pretty pricey. www.tirerack.com has them.
The TPS was a simple mod. Instructions are at www.speedtweaks.net in the tips and tricks section. I really didn't see much gain but it helped the low end throttle response of the 4.7.

$134 a tire. Damn. Who goes 149 mph anyhow. I just want the traction. I might have to investigate this one quite a bit. How did the 255/65-16's hook up for you? Seems like if I combined those tires(255/65-16's) with an activesuspension rear end i'd be able to grip pretty well. You've got pretty much the same truck I do except for the regular cab and the sport model.

I can't launch hard in first but they grip pretty well. I will go up a size or two the next replacement to help out. I want to try the roadmaster active suspention supposed to help with traction and wheel hop. The 16s grip a little better than the 15s as well. The stock tire rubber compound sucks as well. You will probably be happy with a good replacment 255.

Sounds good. 255's are considerably cheaper than the 275's. I'm probably going to invest in the active suspension as well. Heard they took .2 seconds off of an R/T's quarter mile time. Do you even use 1st gear that much? I very rarely use it because of how low it is. I usually just start out in second. That works fine.

Mine are definataly less expencive. I have 31s on my old 4x4. I bought the cheapest ones I could find and they were not any less than descent tires for my 2wd. I don't envy the 4x4 crowd for that.

I used to own a nissan 4x4 and always payed an arm and leg for tires. I hated it it. Loved the truck though. With 4x2's its the speed rating on the tire that seems to get you. Like with those scorpians. A VR rating. Sure you might be able to go 149mph on the tires but why the heck would I want to go that fast anyhow. I just want to get off of the line quicker. I also doubt my Dak will ever run 1/4 mile times worthy of 149mph tires.

Hey CW, Do you have the 275/60R16 all around or just in back? I've got the stock wheels and rims 16's with the goodyear 255's.
I only need new back tires,,,wider, preferably. I'm not good with tire sizes,,,so will 275/60's be taller or shorter sidewalls? Will the truck's ride height change?
Thanks

andy

Shorter. They'll be more of a low profile looking tire. They are VR rated tires so the shorter the side wall the better

are there any other good tires around this size?

285 is in mm, or millimeters, which is 11.22 inches wide.
60 is sidewall height, or 60% of width, .6x11.22 is 6.73 ".
2 x 6.73 is 13.46 plus 16" for rim and you get 29.46" total tire height.

CW is right the "scorpion zero's" hook up great , if the truck was a stock V8 with a auto I don't think I could spin them at all , with lots of mods I have to try to spin them. When you do spin them they don't squeal (good around cops). The tires handle better and don't roll over on the sidewalls in a turn like car tires do . I put on 255/55/16 they lower it a bit and the spedo is off 5% or something like that , about 3mph at 60. The change makes effective the gear ratio lower.

The 285 sounds like a interesting size. I will have to look into that. I want to keep the front and rear tires the same hight because I have 4 wheel ABS and it doesn't like to see a different speed from the front ot rear tires.

Hey CW,,,,
What would happen if I kept the stockers up front, and replaced my rear tires with 285/60',,,ABS wise? You mentioned something might happen with larger tires in the back,,,obviously turning at diffent speed than front.
I did this on a '98 F150 I had w/ABS on the back only, and nothing went wrong.

if you only have ABS in the back it won't matter. If you have 4-wheel abs I can see where it would be a problem. My solution would be a 265/65-16 tire up front. This would be within 1/10 of an inch as far as height goes.

I found the goodyear's at tirerack.com
