Subject: Exhaust Mods for 94' 5.2L? IP: Logged
Message: Hey all.... I own a 1994 Dodge Dakota SLT 4x4 with a 318 magnum V8, and a auto tranny. I'll be needing to replace the exhaust of the truck as the pipe and muffler are nearly falling apart. and I was wondering, what is the best option for a new exhaust, that will won't hurt the trucks torque (The Dakota is occasionally used to pull a boat, and snowmobile trailer, so I'd rather have loads of torque than Hp), but will add power, give it a nosy, aggressive rumble, but still make sure that It can be driven as a daily driver without the exhaust volume driving the passengers crazy. From what I've read, a single pipe would work best, and then just throw dual tips on it. Also, the cat will be coming off with the exhaust as the last owner took it to a exhaust shop that butchered the installation of the new cat converter. Any suggestions of what the best option would be for this truck, and what sort of muffler and pipe size to go with?

Message: Are you going to do the complete exhaust or just the cat back? I have a 2.25 in. ypipe and 3 in. From there back with a high flow cat and a 2 chamber flowmaster. Single 3 in. tip as well. Also if you could find a set of 92-93 manifolds you would gain a little b/c I think those years had slightly better ones. But it may not be worth the trouble.

Message: Those years did have better manifolds. The tubes were larger, therefore better flowing.

Message: If you want to keep the torque up I'd go with tri-y headers( mopar performance or doug thorley). The 92-93 manifolds are larger (2 1/8 vs. 1.7/8) and are the reason that the 93' had (230hp/280tq) vs. (220hp/300tq) for 94-96. I have a link to a web site where a guy with a 94' installed doug thorley headers on his truck. The truck had a mpp pcm, cat back, k&n intake on it already and had a rear wheel increase of 18 horsepower and 27.7 ft/lbs. of torque from the headers! As for the cat backs I hear that MPP, dynomax, and magnaflow give nice gains without a loss of torque. I hear that alot of guys think the flowmaster are to noisy and loss some low-end power. The normal 5.2 cat-back setup is of a 3 inch single replacement type. If you could find a 2.75 inch set it would be better on torque and noise. An aftermarket cat will make the exhaust louder and I have heard of people lossing tq with 3 inch replacement cats. Some manufacturers of nice cat's are magnaflow, dynomax, car sound and Random technologies. If you could find a complete 2 3/4 inch header back setup it would be your best bet on getting the most torque from your exhaust.

Message: I got the link off this site, it's www.mikesdakota.com. The truck is the same color as your's but is a RC markIII truck. He has pics. of the dyno runs and drag time slips.
I found his truck on www.dragtruck.com also. Thats a great site to see what people are running and what they are using to run the #'s you want to run.

Message: Thx for all the feedback, everyone. And in response to the earlier qusetion, I'm just doing a full exhaust job from the manifold's and back. The entire pipe is in shabby shape so the whole thing might as well get torn out all at once.

Message: I was wondering if anyone has tried putting Dual exhaust on their dakota b4, and what sorta results they ended up with. I've been talking with some people with a big background of working on mopars, and I've been told I can get great torque improvements with putting on 2 1/4 inch Mopar headers and dual 2" pipes instead of a single 3" pipe /w dual 2.5 inch tips. Also, can anyone tell me what sorta of gas milage to expect after going with true duals, or going with a single pipe. I was wondering what kind of economy I'd have left b4 making a final choice of which path to take. Thx!

Message: I have read on this site and KRC that the oppisite is true and people lose alot of low end when going to true dual.

Message: Have a '95 Dak., 5.2L, 5 speed, 4X4. Bought a SS muffler from Summit, 3" in, 2 2.5 out, and had a muffler shop bend duals. They work fine and have been on for 5 years now. Pleasing tone but not too loud nor objectionably sharp. Also bought the factory tri-Y, but the primaries are too large to scavenge exhaust pulses effectively. Now have a set of ceramic coated Pace Setter shorties with 1.5 primaries, and they work fine and sound mellow. Hope it helps, but sound quality is more subjective and power production usually overstated by manufacturers.
