Message: I got all paranoid when my did it. I found out this is normal, but it has only happened to me, 3 times. Sound goes away in less than a minute. I believe it has something to do with the fan clutch being engaged (or dis-engaged, I'm not sure which) and not allowing the fan to freewheel. After a few seconds, the fan releases and then freewheels. Something like that?!? No worries, though.

Message: Hey,
Most Vehicles with a fan clutch that works off of heat, in other words the aluminum thing on the fan with fins. Most are fluid filled, when it heats up the clutch allows the fan to spin with force otherwise, it free wheels. In the morning at times and on take of the clutch is disengaged and the fan will spin so it will sound loud. My S-10 has done it for the last 170,000 miles. If it is loud all the time that means the fan clutch is bad and a new one is about 60 bucks.
Hope this helps

Message: If you don't like the fan 'roar', you can either geta Flex-Fan (elimnate the clutch and gain some HP! Flex fans work by the blades actually changing pitch at higher RPM to 'grab' less air. Although I've heard stories where blades have ripped off and shot through the hood, doesn't seem to be too common though with proper mounting) or you can go electric. Of the two, a flex is probally easier to hook up and cheaper.

Message: The clutch fan only roars when it locked, engaged. It normally slips but when its cold out, or when you idle in one place for a while it will engage. Spinning the motor up will heat up the clutch pack when it's cold and release it, or when you've been sitting a long time just get moving or rev it up and it should free up. If you never hear the roar I'd wonder if its working at all, that seems just as bad as always hearing it. Seeing as how the clutch fan is hardly even needed on the 2000 up Dakotas I guess it doesn't really matter if it never engages. I saw some tests in old Mopar Muscle mags where they said a clutch fan retrofitted onto a older musclecar with a normal metal fan will help a bunch. They said the flex fan is good as well, but in the higher RPM range it starts robbing more power then the clutch fan, and the clutch fan is better at letting the motor spin up ahead of it, as it just slips, and catches up later. Of course this was all before electric fans, and flex fans may have also improved over the last 20 years, but so may have the clutch fans.

Message: Your right of course. But if I remember correctly the Flex fan doesn't start to negativly effect the powerband until you get about or around 5000 RPM. The clutch fan on the other hand, is heavy and effects the power band lower in the RPM range. It all depends on where your looking to make your gains, really. Since the optimal RPM range on my truck is between 2500 and 4000 RPM, a flex fan would benifit me more than a clutch. It's all personal preferance. :0)

Message: My brother about cut his thumb off on one of those flex fans and it was when the motor was stopped! I just get bad memories of them everytime I see them. They are a good bang for the buck kind of thing and look betterthen a big old clutch fan. I paln on dropping my clutch fan this summer, and see how it behaves. Then maybe I'll add a extra electric fan if it seems to heat up at a stop. Luckily the longest lights and biggest traffic jambs around here (Montana) nothing to worry about!

Message: I noticed the amount of Dak owners with fan clutch noise on a cold engine. Anyone out there have the same problems with the A\C on? My '97 Dak fan clutch only kicks in whith the A\C on, and it doesn't want to shift from 1st to 2nd. Dealer said this is typical and to live with it.

Message: Go ELECTRIC.
One time I changed a fan on my friends car to one that didn't "grab" as much when you hit the gas.
It made so much difference that he could burn the tires on takeoff when it coudn't before!
But the electric fan is the best choice. It also makes soo much more room in front of the engine too!

Message: D is right!
Just take it off if you have the electric fan setup. The electric fan is designed to turn on at 210F(on mine at least) and will bring the temp down to 180(if you have a 180F thermostat);and when the A/C in ON, the electric fan is also constantly ON (that answers R.White question partially). If you worry about the weather, I live in the lowest south of Texas where temps normally are above 100F. On the other hand, if you want for your truck to be constantly running at 180F(in my case) then don't take it off and live with the noise.

Message: My '03 Dak starts off sounding like a school bus too, even when the crack-of-dawn temp is 75° (not unusual in southern Louisiana, even in spring.) And my '91 Dak's fan always paddled air first time I took off in it, so I think it has something to do with the viscous coupling getting stiff when not moving, regardless of temperature. Now in my '91 Dak, I can actually feel the loss of HP when the radiator heats up enough to engage the fan clutch as I'm driving down the interstate. It's just now getting smokin' hot enough to make the engine driven fan in my '03 come on as well as the electric fan.
