Subject: Engine off-center? IP: Logged
Message: I was under my truck today ('95 Dakota 4x4), trying to see how much trouble it will be to replace the 5.2 with the 5.9 I bought out of a wrecked Ram. I didn't know that the engine is mounted off-center. Anybody know why, and will I get myself in trouble if I change it?
I'm asking because it looks like I'll have to make new mounts when I take off the front suspension to put on a real front axle.

Message: Well it is due to the rest of power train. You have to make the engine, transmission transfercase and two drive shafts clear alot of suspension componets. It is much easier to put the diff's in the middle of axel houseing and the suspension parts where you want them and then move power train around to fit. When you do it the other way around you end up with alot of offset diff's with different length axel shafts..... I have seen some old jeeps where one axle shaft is 4-5 feet long and the other side was only 2 feet long because the diff was offset that much to make everything fit. You will still see some diff offset with the more modern approach of offseting the powertrain but it usualy is not a sever as the older method is.
