Subject: 93 rearend noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1993 dakota with a 8 1/4 3.55 geared rearend and it makes a clank/clunk noise whenever I am driving down the road and get back on the gas after letting off for a second. It does not matter what speed I am going or how cold or hot it still does it. I have already replaced all of the u-joints and pulled the cover off and checked the carrier bearings and everything seems to be tight. It seems like I read somewhere that the axle splines wear out on these trucks but I do not remember where that was located. ANY ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Message: I got the same thing on my 94" LSD 8.25 rear. I have owned it for 5 years and it has always clunked if I want it to. I chock it up to some slop in the drive shaft and general drive train wear. I know my axel splines are ok since I just had the rear open about 6k ago. It's not trans either since that was replaced in the past 5k. I figure it's somewhere in between.

Message: I own a 92 and it has did the same thing for a
while. I thought it was the rear end too but
under closer examination I discovered that the
chain and sprockets in the transfer case were
screwed and the chain was skipping causing
the clunk. Because I let it get out of hand it
also caused cracks in my transfer case.
needless to say I need a new one. Something
to check out before it's too late.
