Subject: OK, finally an air intake. What gives? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dak QC w/ 4.7L. All stock so far.
I've been reading all these posts about cold air intakes, so I bought one off Ebay. A basic chrome elbow type with K&N style filter at the end. Installation was a breeze. However, when I give it throttle, it makes this sucking noise and then with more throttle, it sounds like it gets a little bogged down and then takes off. I checked the mileage after the first tank and doesnt seem to have changed..still 13-14mpg.
I also changed to Autolite 3923's at the same time as the intake install.
I feel like I should be more impressed with the air intake than I am. Any input?? This was the first upgrade I've started to make.
Thinking about changing back to the stock box or maybe attaching the chrome tube to the air hat to see if that makes any difference.
Appreciate any feedback from fellow DAK'ers. Thanks, Norm

Message: You won't feel any mileage differences if you punch it constantly to hear the sounds. The sucking sound is normal. What does a bogging down sound like? Its more than likely normal. Where is the air intake positioned? You want it to be close to the front if possible. remove the rubber flap next to the radiator to let in more cold air (if you have a rubber flap). Don't worry about rain. You would have to submerge the K&N filter to suck water through it.

Message: I didnt say I was punching it to hear the noise. I really am not looking for sound, just better efficiency, if possible. But, for instance when you are getting on to the highway. It starts to make that sound before the pedal is even half depressed.

Message: It's not going to make much difference over stock. You may have gained a total of about 5 horsepower.
You need to go get a 3" exhaust system installed that includes 3" pipe from the y-pipe to the 3" catalytic converter and then on back to a hi-flow 3" muffler and tail pipe. That will give you big gains.
You need to get your computer flashed by Mike Leach & Co. out in California. That will give you a huge kick in the pants.
You could also make good use of a larger throttlebody. Either buy a revised stock piece, a billet aluminum custom piece or port your own.
On top of that, you need to run a 180 degree thermostat, which will allow you to remove the clutch fan from the water pump snout and just run the auxillary electric cooling fan with no problems.
It also wouldnt' hurt to order yourself the camshafts from a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander. These camshafts will give you even bigger gains in hp and torque.
All these mods together will give you stellar preformance from your 4.7 truck. There are plenty more mods, but that will get you started.

Message: I thought most people lost power when they went to a 3" exhaust. I understood the way to go was to just swap in a muffler to your 2.5" system unless you were planning forced induction.

I currently have a 360intakez, 68mm Fastman, 3923's and a 180t-stat.
I am planning on swapping the stock cat and muffler for a carsound 2.5" cat and a 2.5" edelbrock heavy duty RPM muffler

Message: While running a 68 mm TB but before he added the turbo, Duner installed a full 3" exhaust system from the y-pipe all the way back. He has a dyno graph that shows a 9hp gain across the board. It also shows a total peak gain of 37 hp, but that number is at 6000 rpm.... you need to flash the computer to even see that rpm.

Message: Doubt i'll ever flash the computer. I can't have down time with my truck.
Could I expect more h.p. though by leaving some of the back pressure? (2.5")

Message: You're only cheating yourself by not flashing the computer. it's only three days with no truck. Just borrow Mom's car. or get a ride to work.
While the 2.5" exhaust will give you more low end torque, your motor will be giving up wheezing by 4500-4700 rpm. With the 3" system, you will see gains from about 2000 rpm all the way up to 5500+ rpm. And with a 70mm TB or 72mm TB, the gains will be even bigger.

Message: Mom's car...funny. As soon as someone comes out with a flash that is worth a damn and can't be flashed over...i'll get it. Like the ASE...its still up in the air as to whether or not its worth much of anything
So if I went with a 2.5" free-flow cat and a standard cat back 3" pipe after muffler...in theory I could land somewhere in the middle of gaining power in the low and high ends while not losing anything? Cause I really want my low-end. I do occasionally tow and drive in quite a bit of stop and go.
I am thinking about upgrading to the 71mm fastman. I think they flow 850 cfm's.

Message: When I added the 70mm TB and the 3" Dynomax cat-back kit, it lost its low end and picked up a lot at top end. But it really wouldn't rev past 5000 rpm with much power at all.
When I installed the 3" pipe from the y-pipe to the 3" cat and then to the 3" Dynomax kit, it picked up noticeable power from 2000 all the way up to 5500 rpm. And it makes it a lot throatier, too. i was worried it was going to take away all my bottom end, but it really did not.

Message: CThomp,
I've got true duals, equal length (2.25"), mandrel bent, and a removed third cat, and I got a pretty hefty gain on my next dyno run. My dyno with that exhaust, 3923's, and the K&N drop in air filter in the stock box was 207.5 HP and 268.6 TQ. No low end loss. I'm thinking of installing an x-pipe somewhere down the line, but I'm not sure where to place it yet.

Message: Food for thought. Now I just have to decide whether or not to have the muffler shop build it out of aluminized steel or stainless.

Message: Dude, you're not still pissed off about the "Search First" post are you? hahahahha
I'm full of knowledge about these trucks. It just takes the right question before I'll give a good answer. The days when I start being a smart-ass are the days that I'm bored at work. And those are usually the same days that everyone has decided to ask questions like "What's the best Flowmaster for my 4.7???" And "What's the difference in LSD, Posi, and Anti-Spin???"
I just get jaded, and if the person who posts comes off as a dill-weed who hasn't done his research, I'lll come out swingin'..... just a bad habit. Sorry.

Message: Demon Dakota, if I were you I'd get an X-pipe for sure ... and put it as close to the front as you can ... well in front of the mufflers at least. You should notice a considerable gain in low-end torque (especially if you don't have one right now).
Hey alex .. I've got a question. Whats the best throttle body spacer for the 4.7L? ha! ... or a better one, would upgrading the pushrods on my 4.7L give me more power?
