Subject: 4.7L exhaust...bad upgrade?

Hey y'all,

Couple weeks back I was at the track with my 2000 Dakota reg cab 4x2, 4.7L Auto. Last fall when she was new, ran 15.00s all day, fastest of 14.96.

Two weeks ago, with air intake & exhaust and finally being "broken-in" she ran 15.30s all day.

The exhaust is simply a custom shop, split to duals set up with a retarded glasspack. The air intake system is a custom, mandrel bent 3" pipe with an open conical filter.

Could the exhaust or combo of exhaust and filter killed some power? How do I get it back?

Would a 40 or 50 series flowmaster bring some backpressure again or should I buy a Gibson single cat-back? How about go back to stock set up?

I put a Mopar Performance full 3" cat-back system on my truck and it slowed it down by a bunch. It came with a Gibson truck muffler.... and it made my truck sound like a garbage truck. I absolutely hated the sound. I ended up buying a 70 series flowmaster and putting in on there. It brought back most of what I lost as far as performance goes and it sounds much better to me. More than likely, the engine appreciates some of the back pressure that the 3-chamber muffler creates. Right now it's a little quieter than most people would probably like.... but it sounds good to me!

I have a Mopar 3" cat-back on my 4.7, the performance was a great improvement over stock plus it sounds like a muscle car. I also added a homebrewed K&N intake which made things even better. It's a great setup, my 4.7 isn't complaining.

I used the Flowmaster 3" cat back with the 50 series. There was a small loss of power. I think I've gained it back plus some with my cold air intake though.

BAD results!!!
I TOTALY REMOVED MY MUFFLER AND PLACED A PIPE IN ITS PLACE AND I LOST A LOT OF POWER!
15.65@86.5 vs 16.1@82 W.O MUFFLER.
I NEVER WOULD HAVE BELEIVED IT BUT IT'S TRUE. MAYBE THE 4.7 IS TUNED TO RUN THE WAY IT WAS SET UP FROM THE FACTORY.
