Subject: stock air intake design on 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: just some thoughts...it seems as though many aftermarket cold air intakes are not making nearly as much of a gain on the 4.7 as on the magnum engines (I.e. the K&N Fipk makes only 5-7 hp)...common sense would tell me that the stock design is pretty efficient. With this in mind, my question is would a drop in K&N filter add any benefit whatsoever or would I possibly lose power considering the drop in maybe pulling in more hot air than the stock air filter?

Message: A drop-in replacement filter will have no effect on the temp of air entering the intake. The only things that will change the intake air temp while still using a drop in filter in the stock air box are drilling holes in the bottom of the airbox or removing the air snorkel that pulls air from the fenderwell into the airbox.
I used to run an airaid (open filter) on my 4.7. Worked pretty good in cool weather but got a little sluggish in hot weather. I switched to an IP Z-tube with the cold air cannister and it has worked great in cold and hot weather. I was a little concerned about the tube itself heating up the intake air since the tube is metal and it does get pretty warm, but it seems to do better than the open filter in hot weather. But that's just the butt-dyno...I have no numbers to back up what I'm saying.

Message: It is my opinion that a K & N replacement filter will show you some increased air flow to your engine, I used them in several vehicles all with excellent results.

Message: The stock intake with a K&N drop in filter is about as good as it gets. It pulls cool air from the windshield area. The K&N drop in filter should have better flow characteristics (but I have no proof of that) I was surprised the stock filter had printed flow spec’s on it, I have not seen flow specs on the K&N but I use em because I believe.

Message: K&N filters are way overrated IMO,They flow very well when new but a month later the flow drops of alot especially if you drive in a dusty area not to mention that they filter the air quite badly.I used to have the z-tube with the 9inch pro-flow on my 4.7 and found it worse than with the stock setup in TQ but it did help a little over 3000rpm,like the post above says the stock setup pulls colder air than any of the aftermarket setups outthere

Message: If you look inside the stock air box you will see two air chambers that gives you a standing wave of air to the TB,I have tried the K&N and Airaid systems and went back to the stock box,I did mod it to 3 inches to mate it to the 70mm TB.To get cold aie I did move the heater hoses from under the TB and run them around the fire-wall to reduce the heat on the air box.

I'm freaked. Thinking I might put the stock filter back on. Anyone have any data on flow and filter performance for stock and K&N?

Message: No they dont, especially if you go offroading alot.K&N even recommends a oil foam wrap on top of there filter for any dusty areas.$6.85 here in canada for a new replacement stock filter for the 4.7,I toss it every 6 months when I change my oil, cant beat that in IMO.

I used to swear by them but not anymore, just take a look at them after you wash them out and re-oil,the holes get bigger :)

Message: If you read the posts and various performance web sites closely the people/representatives that sell air intakes (k&n, airaid, volant whomever) are the one's that say the 4.7 stock air hat is sooooooooo restrictive.
The 4.7 owners that actually buy them don't think there that great, especially for the money paid.
Why do you think air intake sellsman say the stock hats are soooooooooooo restrictive? (rhetorical question)

I think the bottleneck is at the inlet to the box. That tube is about 3. I say make it 4 or 4.5 and fahion another plasic 4.5 inch tube exactly to the stock position next to the fender.
IMHO the key is filling that stock box with air fast creating that downdraft in the tube. I just got the dam thing and was looking at the setup.
Put on a magna flow with stock pipes 2.5 thats it so far, only 220 miles

Message: Remove the stock elbow inlet and the rubber flap between the radiator and headlight. Buy a Fernco 4" "no-hub" from Home Depot or Lowe's for about $7, and now you have "mini ram air" to the stock box. For my homebrew 4.7 details, check out the post "What is the best intake?".

Here is your ideas with a 22 degree and a 45 degree pvc pipe. I haven't tried either yet, but they help direct the draw from the fender. Put your piece on then slide the pvc on and adjust it, Like you said the PVC also has that venturi effect because of the larger opening. I suspect that small 22 degree angle one will be it. If you are real crazy sand the outside and clean it up, then grind the inside till it is very thin plastic. Use 60 or 80 grit and work your way smooth and polish inside of the pvc pipe, The pipe starts out at about 1/8 inch you can grind a considerable amount from the inside.

Message: I also stuffed some plastic wrapped insulation in the fender well behind the opening to the old snorkle. The air will enter the fender and be diverted into the area around the fernco. I didn't remove the rubber flap. I cut 2 2x2 holes in it. I found the truck was a dog at high speeds without diverting some air into the front of the fernco. Works great now with diverted air from the fender and the holes.
Obviously I can't give technical data but it seems to definitely have more throttle out of the hole, slight increase in the response.
The extra parts don't fit to bad there easn't enough room for the 22 degree fitting
