Message: Well just bought 94 dakota black V-8, manual, 93k, no options, excellant shape, and after market CD player. Bone stock!!!! The truck runs excellant.
Couple of questions:
1. How do I find out what the rear end gear
2. What did they run bone stock in the 1/4?
3. I'm trying to improve fuel economy, ideas?
4. What brand of shorty headers?
5. What brand of dual exhaust? or is single better
6. What kind of CAI or K&N cone filter?
7. What kind of octane fuel, 87, 89, 93?
8. Basic tuneup ideas, what o2 and plugs?
I have ready the site already, mostly the newer gen 97-up, any known faults with the 94 dakota?
Great site
Thanks

Message: There are a few of us with old daks running around here. I have the same year, same motor. Let me try and answer as many questions as I can.
Your rear end should have several metal tags on the rear end. I believe the tag at the 11:00 position (at least that's where mine was) should be the tag that denotes the rearend gear.
As far as economy. I had good luck with an MSD 6AL box. I gained 1 or 2 miles/ gallon. Also changine the air filter to a free flowing peice will help.
I run JBA shorty headers. I have heard that these and the Mopar headers are the best for the magnum motors.
Exaust is a big can of worms. Everyone has their opinion of what's best. Pesronaly I use a Flowmaster catback setup modified from a 97-99 dak. It is a single 3" out. I really like the sound. I think it's about comperable to one of their 60 series mufflers, not too loud and overbearing. Just a nice deep note. With dual exaust, at least true duals, you can have probloms not making enough back presure. But there are some that have done it.
I'm sure everyone is tired of seeing me post this, but I really like my cold air setup from www.ramairbox.com You can also go with one of the K&N FIPK setups, but it is slower than using a true cold air. It's also noisy.
If you don't have the proformance computer you can get away with mid grade fuel. Just listen for spark knock.
I use a bosch o2 sensor and Denso plugs. That's just what I happen to have at the moment. I would change the cap and rotor too, as well as spark plug wires.
The only known fault I know of is the fuel gauge went bad in many daks from this year. It was a problom with the sending unit if i'm not mistaken. You can tell when there is a problom because the gauge goes back and forth fairly quickly. I also have the transmission kick the over drive off every so often and I have to press the OB button. The yellow light on the OD switch means that the OD is off. Hope this helps.

Message: I run a Powertrax in mine for LSD. I haven't had any probloms in the 6 months that i've had it. It does hook up well now, especially if I have the traction bars dialed in right.
