Message:
I have a 1999 Dakota sport 4x4 5.2, no mods. I get about 11 mpg, if a really baby it I might get up into the low 12 mpg range. It also seems like it just does not want to accelerate. when I first got the truck about a year ago it ran just fine and got much better gas milage. It idles just fine but it sound like it is pinging when I try to accelerate. what might be happening? is the engine leaning out? it the timing off? could it be a vacum leak?

First thing I would have the computer scanned for any problem codes. You could look through your TB to see if your belly pan is leaking oil, this could make your truck run poor and get bad gas mileage. You could also look at your spark plugs to see if your motors running properly. Any deposits like black soot could mean it running rich possibly from the oil thourgh the manifold gasket. Any other problems like a bad senor should come up on the pcm scanning.

Good luck an I hope you find your problem.

first look into the bellypan gasket, then look at the cat. bang on the cat, and if it rattles (which you might be hearing), it is bad

I took it to a mechanic a while back and said there were no errors and no pending error in the computer. I checked the fuel pressure and it is right on. I just looked through the throttle body and there is an oil film on the bottom of the intake pan. How much residue would cause concern? I would assume a little is normal from pulling air through the PCV valve. While I had the intake off, I took a look at the distributor cap and rotor, I am going to replace those two items tomorrow and see if fixes it; they are really corroded. The manual says to replace them every 60k miles. That is still 15k miles away but they are looking bad. I will work on that and post the results.
What about transmission service intervals? How often should I have a trans tune up? It seems to have strange shifting patterns. Would a vacuum leak cause that?

What gears?? 3.55??? My wife's 4x4 5.2L, sport CC with 3.55 gearing pinged under load-- put headers, TB, lower temp thermostat-- and that helped-- BUT... the 3.55 gearing is the major factor-- run in drive (OD off) most of the time, and rev the piss out of it-- no problems.

Lugging it in OD 1800 rpm or so is where the thing would ping like a mofo-- 3.92 geared trucks don't have this problem... the additional 200-300 rpm makes a world of difference.

Really take a look at the cat, because I had that problem. It sounds like what I went through, except I had mods and the power loss was immediate, no exhuast note.

If you have oil in the intake I would change the belly pan gasket. That could cause most of your symptons

Ok, three mechanics, three different ideas. First one says I need a tune up. The second says I need the (stock) PCM reprogrammed, and the third one had a few things to say. The only two mods are the KN FIPK, and the FMS injectors. I have changed the spark plugs, cap and rotor. When he hooked it up to the computer I guess the computer is getting a rich condition from the O2 sensors, (Also new) so the injectors are running as lean as they can and it still gets the rich condition. Well, then if my truck is running rich then why does the truck still ping when I accelerate? I have synthetic oil with about 3k miles on it and it still looks brand new so there is no fuel deposits floating around in it. He also said it could be the timing chain is stretched but he doubts it since I only have 45k miles on it. I average 10.5 mpg city and freeway, mainly freeway though. If I really baby it, I get 11 mpg. Oh, he also said that it does not sound like a blockage, ie, a bad cat. What is going on?

I had a cat go out, there not the best cats. i lost alot of horsepower and got horrible gas millage. i tried going over MT Ashland in oregon and couldnt make it up it. on my way to oregon i had a ranger pull away from me at 60mph very imberising. another thing i noticed is i lost all my exhaust tone from my flowmaster. the truck sounded like a stock one.

I have a '97 Dak 4x4 w/ a 5.2 in it, i have 33x15.50 swampers on it and about 7" of liftand i still get 12 to 13 MPG. My mods right now are a set of MSD 8.5 race wires, Accel Super Coil, Accel cap, and Accel Rotor, a K&N FIPK system, custom Flowmaster Exhuast w/ no cat and 3.55 gears i'm not complaining, but like RTDKOTA said the gears are the biggest factor in your fuel mileage problem. id do a tune up on it, have the fuels system serviced and go from there. I wouldn't go and have the ECU reprogrammed at this point. I'd really reccomend the 8.5 MSD Race wires and the Accel Super coil, cap, and rotor. With these on your truck it gets more spark to the cylinders and with help burn up more fuel in the cylinder and it won't make the computer richen up the Air/Fuel mixture. All it does is make more spark which will make you get more power with out losing what fuel mileage you have left.

I go heavy on overkill when it comes to preventative maintenance. Cap, rotor, and plugs every 15K. Mobil 1 oil and filter, every 3K. Tranny, transfer case, and differential fluids every 15K or once a year, whichever comes first.

I figure the costs are pretty minimal compared to the thousands of dollar you spend on your truck.

I agree with the cat issue. I had a similar fuel milage problem on my corvette. Then suddenly, the cat plugged and the power went away. You can check it easily by disconnecting it on the engine side and look at it. If it looks like screen and its white, its probably ok. If its black, its probably plugged. Just my .02

I have the exact same problem and that is why I am here tonight. I dropped the tank and changed the whole fuel sending/pump/filter unit and noticed an immediate difference. My problem has returned about a year later though. I wouldn't totally discount the plugged cat theory, because once I replaced the filter I didn't get all my fuel milage back, but started noticing a FOUL odor after extended idling. I never got the chance to fix the cat so I don't know if that is a contributer.

I have a 98 cc 4x4 5.2, It also pings under load, not at full throttle. I changed plugs cap rotor still pings only when fully warms up. When it runs cooler it doesnt seem to ping. It is hard to tell what temp I'm running at. The gauge is from 130 to 210 center. I am running about 3/4 the way to 210degrees. Not sure if I already have a 180 degree stat in it. I checked the coil for resistance. The book said .96-1.18 ohms,, Mine came up 1.4 ohms. Could my coil be the problem?

fix pinging two ways

1 180 tstat
2 more octain

pinging is fuel and air burning two fast(in the intake not the chamber). Slow down the burn with either lower tempurature ie:180 tstat. And/Or slow down the burn with more octain. Gears have as much to do with pinging as your passenger window.
HemiDakota97, you get good gas mileage because your tires are bigger, each rotation covers more distance

run higher octane now that it's broke in. at least 89 for the 5.2. also, at a quarter tank, pour a bottle of injector cleaner. on the next tank pour some Marvel Mystery Oil.
