Subject: Dakota heavy duty radiator IP: Logged
Message: I just had my radiator replaced on my 2000 Dak 4.7 V8 by my dealer. It got punchured by road debris. Not covered by warrenty but my insurence company covered it under comprehensive. Anyway... the new radiator is different than the old one. Its thinner and also has plastic ends on it. My question is... did I have a heavy duty radiator before and end up with regular one or is this the new design of the radiators?
Thanks,
WillieG

Message: FYI,
I went back to the dealer today and here's what I found out. First, the heavy duty radiator core is about twice as thick as the regular radiator. I looked at the new Daks with and w/o the Heavy Duty Service Group. They both have aluminum cores and plastic ends. I talked to the service advisor and explained that I though I had a heavy duty but ended up with a regular. She just said they put the one in that's made for my truck. I told her that there are two that can fit the truck, she did't seem to comprehend that. I asked to see the old radiator and it actually was a regular one so I didn't get screwed as Dakaty was implying above.
What threw me was the fact that on my old one the 1/2 size core is offset on the frame toward the front and on the new one it is offset toward the back. So the new one leaves a bigger gap between the radiator core and the air conditioner condenser.
BTW, I found a cool site that has pdf files of Dodge and Chrysler parts catalogs. Its at http://www.chryslerparts.net

Message: My 95 club cab has a 318 V8 that I pull a 22' cargo trailer daily, I've had to replace mine 2 the radiator shop said that the Dakotas are hard on radiators the frame flexs alot. I will match my Dakota for the most part against any any other truck in its class. I think that the 318 is got alot of spunk for a small to mid size truck, I have a freind that has a 1500 it only has a 318 in it I even use it to pull a skid loader and trailer about 6000Lb and a 7500lb camper with no problems

Message: I put A new radiator in my 95 5.2 I didn't like the plastic tanks, they always leak where they connect to the core. I bought an all metal radiator from Storie's automotive in Byrdstown Tn. ( 931 )684-6414 cheaper than any place in Nashville or surrounding counties. It was A direct bolt up and no problems out of it.
