Subject: 00 Dakota Rear IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. I'm new to this Dakota stuff, just picked up a 2000 Dakota Club 4.7L auto Love the truck, I'm sure it's faster than the 2000 Tundra 4.7L that I just sold! Anyway my question is:
What type rear end is in this truck? Stock gears? Thanks!!

Message: It could be any number of things ... Check the glove box and it should have a data sheet that lists that info.
It'll likely be a 3.55 LSD, I think that's the most common .. it could be an open diff. though too, and if you're lucky, a 3.92

Message: It could have:
3.21, 3.55, or 3.92 gears
open differential or Trac-Lock limited-slip
be a 8-1/4 or a 9-1/4 axle
The tag in the glove box will tell if it is limited slip.
Crawl under the rear of the truck and look under one of the bolt holes in the rear axle cover, and it will tell what gear ratio you have. Sometimes there is a tag wrapped around the rear axle that tells the ratio and if open or limited-slip. It is white with black writing: unless it is missing or someone painted it. It is located on the axle tube near either (usually left) brake backing plate.

Message: being a 2000, I think its a 9 1/4 housing ... in fact I'm pretty sure it is.

Message: Glove box says 3.55 gears. Nothing mentioned about LSD or Traction lock. Is there a code for that?

Message: If it does not say "anti-spin" or "trac-loc" it is pretty much an open rear end.

Message: Ok, got it figured out with yalls help. 3.55 gears open diff. Now anyone have a ballpark cost to go LSD? Is typical dealership work? Thanks
