Subject: spark knock HELP IP: Logged
Message: i have been dealing with this for some time now and i just cant take it anymore. i believe that i have read that mopar say a bit of knock does not hurt, but i am not buying it.
the truck does not knock at WOT, but it does at 1/2 to 3/4.
i have the 180 stat., autolite 3923's, 93 octane fuel, even the M1 just in case the belly pan was leaking.
i have even ran octane booster and it was no help.
is the sparkplug wire re-route on speedtweaks supposed to help spark knock??
this is on a '98 5.2, with M1, flowmaster cat back, homebrew ram air, and . . . . this is the problem. . . mopar performance PCM, i just dont want to give it up. i will if i have to!

Message: Since you did all the things that should have cured the problem, you could try an after market up-grade(msd,jacobs,etc.) It sounds like their is either a problem with the pcm or somewhere else. Octane booster should have definitely fixed it if it saw a timing problem. I would just have it checked for any pcm codes, like a bad senor. You could also see if any vacuum lines, wires are off or broken.
Good luck

Message: I went through the same thing with my 98 5.2. Only had a drop in K&N and a custom catback. Driving up for deer hunting last year, just after filling up, gradual incline, pulling a medium trailer with some oak logs....knock, knock,knock...hmmmm this was new. Stopped in at the local dealer to discuss some potentials, intake pan gasket, and the like. They even flashed the pcm with a new "supposed" fix. The battle went on and on. During the cold months cycled some isopropyl through it going with the "bad gas" theory. Was even getting ready to drop the tank, if nothing else, just to make sure. Then all of the sudden, it was gone, and never has returned (knock on wood, ooops, did I say knock). I'm still leaning towards the bad gas, did 5 years for Lincoln Mercury, and drivability wise we had a few. Sorry for the ramblings, but have you checked your fuel pressure. You can hook up the pressure gauge to the schrader, route it to the windshield, and monitor it during a testdrive. Wondering if that in tank sock/filter sometimes does some funky dance, or maybe the fuel pressure regulators go through some sticking.
By the way, I now have 126,000 great miles on it. Been "updating" the front balljoints, tie rods, steering box. Gonna go for another 125,000...I hope.
