Subject: 5.2L having hard starts

Message:
I have a 1998 with a 5.2L and having a problem starting hard unless I turn the key on and let the fuel pump run, then shut the key off and repeat before I start it when its cold. When it is warm I just turn the key on, wait for the fuelpump to kick off once, then start it. Anyone else ever had this problem? Do you know what could be causing it? Thanks

just a guess, how are your spark plugs and wires, this is probly not the problem but if you have a bad coolant temp sensor it may not tell the computer that the motor is cold and only give it enough fuel to start if it were warm, how does it run once you get it started? maybe a fuel filter. just a few places to look

I have already replaced the plugs, wires and fuel filter, I will try the coolant sensor. When it first starts when its cold it is a little rough but then it smooths out after i rev it a few times. thanks for the help.

When my 98 was giving me trouble starting when cold I found the battery was going bad. Changed the battery and problem went away.

There is a check valve in the fuel pump that goes bad and those are the exact symptoms. What happens is that the check valve can no longer hold the fuel up to the injectors and it drains back to the tank. When you go out in the morning and try to start it there is no fuel in the lines and it takes a little longer to build up the pressure.
Good thing is that you do not have to replace the whole pump modual. There is a brass colored oval filter/regulator on the top of the fuel pump, this is where the check valve is. Bad thing is you have to drop the tank in order to replace it.
You need to buy the filter/regulator. The local parts store probably won't have one but hte dealer should know what you are talkiing about.

I WOULD START WITH WHAT GENIII SAID. THE FUEL IS DRAINING BACK TO THE TANK CAUSING THE FUEL RAILS TO LOSE PRIME WHICH IS USUALLY CAUSED BY THE CHECK VALVE.

When it's damp outside it won't start without having to put the gas pedal down then I have to slowly take my foot off the gas until it hits 7 on the tac otherwise it stalls out. On the initial turn of the key it sounds like the battery is shot, but it's not. Any suggestions? It will run ok once it stays running, but then it has the same problem if I leave it off for a short period of time........
thanks

Had similar problems just the other day. Hard to start when I got running it would not keep running. I thought shurley it can't be the battery causing these symptoms she was acting really strange. Got the local auto shop to check the batt for free and it was not holding a charge. Went and got a new battery and that solved everything. Hope this helps
