Message: I bought a new Dakota in January of 2003. CC, 4.7, 5 spd auto, 3.92, awd, 265/70 tires. 12 mpg in town, 18 highway, over 70mph---16 mpg. All stock. I'll be changing over to synthetic oil next change & thought I might drop in a K & N air filter, as well. See what that does.
A buddy of mine has a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7, awd,3.73, & 4 spd auto---gets around 14 in town & 20-21 on the highway. Turns about the same rpms as my Dakota at highway speeds, but is about 700 lbs lighter.

Message: okay, thanks for the insights. I confirmed this weekend that turning OD off did not help things out. The auto seems to grab OD even at relatively low driving speeds so I am getting lower RPMs regularly and this is good for fuel.
I would also scratch the higher octane fuel from my list -- apparently the truck is tuned for 87 octane so consensus is that 88.5 or more could actually impede MPG.
Too bad about the PCM. I thought that one held the most promise. I will calculate mileage on this tank and see how the trip computer compares.
One related thing I wonder about. I thought I read that 16 inch tires were an option on this truck. If so, do they calibrate the computer to the tires from the factory? I would be suprised if they didn't but you never know. If not that would throw off a lot of calculations and acct for some of the disparity among owners in calculated MPGs.

Message: Believe it or not, I've keep a record of mileage on every tankful since I bought my 02/CC 4.7/auto 3.55/LSD 4x2 (bone stock) in June of 02. Literally every time... and I get between 14 and 17 in the city (combinded stop and go traffic with some freeway/expressway driving at 70+mph) no matter how I drive it... hard or easy.
Only taken it out of the city on extended highway trips at 70+ mph a couple times and it crept up to around 20 mpg, but that's it.
Not the best mileage, but considering its a V8 not bad either... I mean the 3.9 V6 that was available when I bought my 02 was only rated a few more mpg than the 4.7 V8... so all in all I'm happy!!!!!!!!! :-)

Message: The highest I've got with my 4.7 QC 4X4 3.55 5-speed AUTO etc was 19 MPG highway. That was after I removed the clutch fan and ran the electric only.
But I rarely stay under 70 on the highway either even when I tow.
Last Dune trip I turned my O/D off for quite a distance. BAD mistake. I filled up in Yuma (drove from Phoenix) and got only 9.7 MPG pulling my trailer and two quads. The last time I went I got around 11 to 12 MPG!
So, on the way home I left it with the O/D on. What I have noticed is that when I switch the O/D off manually it goes into 3rd gear (which is a 1 : 1 ratio) and if I let the PCM control it with the O/D left engaged it drops into 4th gear when it needs to which is still an overdrive (and the torque converter stays locked) and still has enough power to pull my sh*t with better gas mileage.
I heard that in 2003+, like mine, we actually have five forward gears plus the two different second gear ratios. So screw turning off the O/D. In the old days you had to because the tranny would kill itself shifting back and forth but these new ones do NOT do that. It stays in the best gear for long periods of time.

Message: Just checked my mileage for the first time, with about 2700 miles on the truck. 4wd quad cab 5 speed auto V8/3.55s with 245/70/16. Dead of Winter in a snow storm, 60%city, 40%highway, With some wide open throttle on the highway and cruising at 75 or above. Average came to about 11.92. My best on the highway going over 150 miles with cruise set at 55 was 16 or so.
But I dont really think of it in terms of mpg numbers. I think in terms of the fact that I get the same Range as my stickshift 4 cyl. Ranger did, but pay maybe 10-12 dollars more at the pump for a fillup. Seems like well worth the extra cash at each fillup to me.

Message: Used to drive a F-350 with a 460 4 barrel carb. Now drive a 2004 Dakota Quad Cab with 4.7l v-8 4x4. OH yeah. Went from 6mpg to 16mpg. Feels like I'm driving for free.

Message: I own a 2003 Dakota Quad 4x4 gas mileage was getting average 14.7
I put in a AIRAID intake system and it jumped up to 17.9 mpg
Then I installed a summitt "CAT-BACK" exhuast system and my mpg went backward to 13.8 mpg
Can't figure it out

Message: I can, cat backs are worthless on a 4.7.
I also kinda dought the airraid doing anything, under the exact same conditions.

Message: The exhaust probably didn't HURT his MPG. He probably LIKED the sound enough he put his foot into the throttle more!
And don't we all?
