Does anyone know where i might be able to find a set of 10:1, 30-over, Flat top, Forged pistons for a '97 5.2L? I've looked all over and can't find any made just for the 318. If nobody knows anysite or places to call, i had an idea of using a set of the pistons for an older A-engine 318, i think t will work but i wanna make sure first. Anyone got any ideas?

Marty at KRC has the forged Ross pistons. I called him this week about them for my 98' 318. They're 800 bucks. Light weight pistons good for 250 shot of NOS or supercharger. Sweet pistons.

Hughes engines inc. has two sets for sale keith black flat top pistons for the 318 engine. It says that they make a 10.2cr. with 58cc chambers and 9.7 with 62cc chambers. Stock combustion chambers are 60cc right in the middle. The only question I would be concerned with is the compression hieght and type of pin configuration(pressed like stock or floating). The other pistons are heavier, taller, with less compression (9.8 and 9.3) and are cast while the other I think are Hypereutectic.

Other brands to look at are weisco, arias, probe, speed pro, srp(made by je), and trw which I think made oem pistons for alot of mopars engines.

What about my idea of using flat tops made for an older 318ci A-engine? Aren't the bore on the newer magnum 318's and the older small block motor's the same?

I got a set of forged for my 92 {part # l2329f TRW} for just over $300 my cost at the shop Ii work at , but they are only good for like 8.75:1 comp with a 60cc magnum head. Which would be alright for low boost .

The LA 318 pistons should fit a magnum 5.2 with out any problems. The only real difference is that the older motor(pre 73) had floating pins while the magnums have pressed pins.

www.probeindustries.com has custom race pistons at what looks like a reasonable price for a nice piece.

"Probe Custom Pistons, on the other hand, are manufactured of 2518-t6 extruded aluminum forgings. this material and heat treat is exactly the same as that which is used in every top fuel car racing today. And to that application specific forgings and Probe's advanced design techniques and you finish with pistons you can trust to perform."

I am\going to use the steel crank and full floating pistons in my 92 5.2 magnum. everyone said they would fit. but i got to reading and the 273 i think now i cna't remember. but any how the rods are identical to the 318 only difference is that they are lighter so y ou would be able to spin the rpms faster. i should try it but i am short on a few green bucks.

Zach,

If your going to spend the money to get new pistons I wouldn't use the 273 rod to rebuild your engine. Yes the 273 rod is lighter(accelerate fatser) than the magnum but it is also weaker(lower maxhp/rpm level). If I was rebuilding my motor and looking for higher rpm/power, I would get a new forged rod like eagles 3d rods(aprox.$600 a set) which are probably the cheapest strong connecting rod(best would be crower or oliver billet). Connecting rod fatigue like any metal pieces and the insurance a new one gives is well worth it over a broken used one in a new motor.
