408... um ditch the fuel injection and install a carb? Yeah, lets take a big step backwards. How about a supercharger and call it a day. I'd do turbo's if it were easier on a V8. Forced induction owns.

I have a 99 R/T and I'd say the best bang for the buck on a budget is a Hypertech power Programer 3. I gained 20+ hp for $298.99 and you have all kinds of options and can use it on your buddies daks for a small price of course.

40+ HP for $40 - for real!!

I bought my '97 std cab V8 to haul around my other car parts and projects, and I promised myself I wouldn't spend a ton of $$ modifying it, so I've limited myself to very cheap or free mods.

I ported the TB, Intake, heads, and exhaust manifold. Cost me about $40 in porting material, and a LOT of my labor. Taking off the entire upper half of the motor, along with the exhaust manifolds is a lot of work. Once I got everything off, it took about 40 hours of porting/polishing work. I also had a 3 angle valve job done for $125, but I'm not counting that as part of the cost for the mod.

I have some experience porting/polishing heads, so my results are probably better than a novice would achieve, but if you have the patience, you can pull your heads off and do the port job yourself and gain at least 25 hp, more if you have a 3 angle valve job done. I got started porting heads by following the advice on Standard Abrasives' web site: http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyguide.shtm Follow their advice and you'll get good results.

I estimate I gained about 35 - 45 hp with my porting mods. It was a big enough gain, that I've outgrown the stock PCM, and the motor runs very lean now, so the next move is a PCM reprogamming, then probably headers, then cat-back exhaust, and a cam, and a supercharger, and NOS, then of course I'll have to re-build the bottom end to handle all the HP, plus the rear end, and I'll need traction bars, and an upgraded tranny, and then of course I'll need to buy a truck to haul all these parts around in while my truck is being worked on ...... my wife is going to kill me.

If you'd like help/advice on porting you're Mopar heads, drop me a line, I can point you in the right direction.
Cyrus

Cyrus, I have a 1992 Dak 4x4 with 97,000 miles on it, it has a 5.2. I need to replace the intak plenum Gasket and I haved thought about doing a little porting on the intake mainfold and replacing the water pump and timing gears and chain. This would be the perfect time to do the porting also. I like to keep this truck for a while so willing to invest time and money to improve it's performance. I might need to contact you on a few things when I'm ready. I have already removed the torque step and air horns on the throttleboy. I noticed an improvement in performance just doing this. I'm sure the porting and polishing would imrove things alot also.

If you remove the cat, you'll have to get the 'cat sims' you hear about on these forums or the other way is to simply weld a 'bung' into the pipe that you replaced the cat with to accept the 02 sensor. If you're worried about emissions tests then you might want to 'gut' the cat.
I have heard that prolonged periods of idling will trip the check engine lite with the latter two mods, but it's a lot cheaper and easier.
