Subject: RE: OIL PRESSURE IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 with 45,674 miles on it. When it was new the pressure gauge read about half way. Gradually over time the gauge crept lower till it was just on the low mark with a little foreword movement at higher rpm's. Last week it started losing oil pressure, at idle when warm, with the check gauges light coming on at stops.
I mentioned the gauge problem several times to the mechanics at Dodge after taking it in for several warranty repairs and maintenance. They told me it was fine unless the warning light came on.
I pulled the pan off thinking it may be the oil pump and found that the main bearing, second one from the rear, was chewed up with slivers and smaller pieces in the oil pan. Some of the longer pieces were oxidized with no shine so they had been in there a while. There was no sludge and the oil pickup screen was clean except for some small bearing pieces on it.
Upon further inspection, I noticed the main bearing cap was not aligned properly. It stuck out about a 16th of an inch or more towards the back on the driver’s side and about the same amount but towards the front on the passenger’s side. The bearing also serves as a thrust bearing so there is side surface contact with the crank.
I took pictures of everything to the dealer I bought it from and spoke to the main service rep and a mechanic. I showed them both the photos on my laptop and the mechanic said that the main bearing cap being misaligned would not cause any problems. The service manager stated that I could bring my truck in and pay the $100 deductable for them to look at it, but he could not guaranty that the 7 year/100,000 mile drive train warranty would cover repair.
I'm now in the process of pulling the motor to replace the necessary bearings as well as the oil pump. Hopefully, they just put the main cap on backwards after boring the block and I can get it on straight. I will probably need a new motor if not.
This is the first new vehicle that I have purchased and it will definitely be the last Dodge. I can't believe the lack of quality and workmanship as well as the refusal to stand behind their warranty.

Message: I have a 98 dodge w/ a 5.9L. Before I rebuilt the motor due to "piston slap" (broken piston head) my oil pressure was 40-65 warmed up. I replaced the main and rod bearings, honed the cylinders, replaced the bad piston head and gave all pistons new ring. Also replaced the timing chain and all the lifters and the oil pump (making sure the screen was clean and primed it). Even sent the heads to a shop and had them worked over as well. Replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Now the motor has a slight shake at idle, oil pressure cold is 60, but when fully warmed up at idle I have seen anywhere from 5-1 psi (this is with a new mechanical pressure gauge). these pressures are with the original pump put back in since the last 2 new pumps did the same thing. thinking my old pump was obviously good and the new pumps might have been bad, I put it back in. Please help

Message: I have a 97 and i have had the same problems, going down the road i was fine but when i come to a stop it would drop down and the light would come one. I dropped the oil pan replace the pump and changed the sending unit and i have decent pressure now. I have seen Dodges with horrible oil pressure and run forever. If mine does it again i think i am going to get a new motor.

Message: Try a new sending unit or take old one off put a gauge a get a reading that tell you if you have oil pump problem most cases its the sending unit save your mind and wallet for something better than a motor?? Unless you got loop to spare

Message: the hole that the sending unit screws in to, do to the up-right design you are unable to get a true reading, unlike GM with the 90 degree adapter,go to a hardware store get an adapter that will screw in to the block/sending unit, that should fix your oil presure problem, good luck,

Message: My 99 dakota/5.2 liter has just lately been acting up. If it sits overnight when i go to start it it stumbles at first then smooths out. just the other day when i started it it flashed a trouble code. P1294. book says vaccum leak. i checked all hoses with no problems found. the truck is idling faster than usual also.
