Subject: STP Fuel Injector Cleaner?

Anyone tried this stuff? My 93 5.2 keeps dying while idling at stop lights & when i'm shiftin into reverse. I'm pretty sure it's not low oil pressure. Otherwise, any other suggestions would be helpful too.

A while ago my '92 5.2 used to die right after it started up and it wouldnt start up again for like a half hour or so. I got the fuel pump replaced and used that injector cleaner a couple times, hasnt happened since.

Go to Wal-Mart get two can of B-12 Chem-Tool in the steel pint cans. Put booth cans in an fill up. Drive 3/4 of the tank through before you fill up again. This should clean anything that is cloggin the fuel system. I always put one can in at each oil change or before a long road trip. I have never had a clogged injector ever! I have my Dad doing this as well and he has not had a single clogged injector since I had him start doing this.

To me fuel injection cleaner is like adding a grain of sugar to a gallon of kool aid. It is not potent enough to have an effect. An effective way to clean your fuel system is to find a shop with a motorvac engine cleaning system. This sytem uses a detergent to clean the fuel rail/injectors, valves, and tops of the pistons. I do this service quite often at the shop I work at, and am always told by customers how much of a difference it really makes. As for STP fuel injection cleaner, don't waste your money.

I agree with mechanicMike. the motorvac system is the most effective way of cleaning a fuel system. for what it's worth , for maintenance reasons , it doesn't hurt to run a cleaner through the fuel tank once in a while. i sell the STP stuff, but there are a lot of other products that work much better. there is a reason the STP brand is .99 to a 1.99 and other cleaners run up to 20.00 for the same amount of product. you get what you pay for. I personally prefer the TECHRON or SYNPRO products.they are mid price range and work pretty good. we have them all at AUTOZONE. just ask one of the guys, and he'll answer any questions you may have. Hope this helps... Bill

It could also be a bad battery a low voltage condition will drop your computer off line and stall the truck. If the truck starts right back up after stalling this is a suspect.

Fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank can help and sometimes can be a fatal mistake. The older lower compression\hp dakotas (early 90's) used aluminum fuel rails, and almost never clogged an injector, however the newer dakotas from 97 up use a steel system since they have alot more power and pump pressure. I can assure you that if you continually use fuel injection cleaner in the newer dakotas, you will block your injectors. Additionally, it will also make your plugs look like crap, all brownish instead of the nice clean white they should be. Aluminum rails are not recommended on systems with high fuel pressure pumps. If you want a clean running system,.I suggest using the same gas station for your fuel fill-ups,.and fill your tank everytime, not put in 5 or 10 dollars as you have it, and allow the tank to run to the bottom.

There is an even better way than Motorvac but you have to remove the injectors and bring them to a shop with a sonic cleaning system. This is for really clogged ones tho. I read an article where they went to a junkyard and pulled a bunch of old injectors and made them spray like new ones again. The cost is of course prohibitive in most cases. It would be for a seriously contaminated fuel system fix.

White color on plugs means you're running lean/hot. Brown/tan color is good color range and no real problems.

I know it's not a Dodge, but I arrived at your site while looking for info on fuel injector cleaners. I am having trouble getting my '94 Mazda B3000 pickup to pass emission test (Texas).
The first time it barely failed (nox)by about 100 ppm. I had a tune-up and oil change and had it re-tested for emission and it failed 3 times worse than it did before. It still runs a little rough when the A.C. is on, but clatters (on regular gas) with or w/o the A.C. on during acceleration, esp. uphill. The shop owner where I got the tune up suggested that I bring the truck back and let him use a fuel injector cleaner and see if it will pass emission test then. I thought maybe he needed to inspect the previous work done for errors but he claims there's nothing wrong with my engine, that it tested okay on his equipment. I think he's a liar. Any advice? RW.

I'm a firm believer in the STP concentrated injector cleaner (black bottle). Four vehicles over the years with a combined mileage of 420,000 miles between them, never a single injector or fuel system reliability problem. I occasionally use throttle body (carb) cleaner as well. About every 6000-8000 miles with the STP when the tank is full.

Lucas Oil makes an excellent fuel additive & injector cleaner. I used it in my 97 318 and could tell the difference almost immediately. They also make a good oil stabilizer that is much better than STP.

Hope it helps. I don't know about emissions but should improve performance. I'm glad we don't have those tests in WV. Sounds like a Pain in the Rear.
