Subject: Some Dakota questions from a newbie IP: Logged
Message: Hey all!
I wandered over here to get some input on which of 2 possible Dakotas would be the better one for my dad. He now has a '96 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0L I6 in it, and he's getting ready to trade, and thought he'd like a Dakota. I think he will too.
I work for a dealership and right now we have 2 used Dakotas. A '99 Sport Club Cab with the 5.2 and a 2000 SLT Club Cab with the 4.7
How has the 4.7 been holding up? I used to have a '94 Dakota with a 5.2 and I liked that engine. I'm always a little leary of new stuff, and I haven't had any experience with the 4.7 yet, but my careful inspection tells me it shouldn't be all than hard to work on compared to the 5.2 and I definitely like how smooth it is.
Both trucks are 4WD. What kind of MPG should one expect to get with both? I believe they both have 3.55 gears.
Any quarter mile times for both trucks in stock form?
I drive a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Classic with the 4.0L (mildly massaged) that runs 16 flat...I don't wanna get spanked by my old man if we ever get a chance to run 'em.:)
Thanks for your help.
If/when he gets one, I'm sure you'll see more of me here picking your brains.

Message: I have owned 4x4's with both engines. I like my 4.7 better than the 5.2. The mechanics that I have talked to. say that the 5.2 engine is the easiest engine to work on. It has been around for a long time. Gas mileage for me is 12 to 15 mpg depending on how much lead is in my foot!!!

Message: Thanks for the replies, guys.
I ended up selling my dad the 2000 with the 4.7 in it. He really likes it so far. As far as any mods, I think we can safely say it'll be a stretch to get him to buy anything more than a K&N drop-in.
BTW, does the 4.7 take the same oil filter as the 5.2? (Mopar 5281090) I buy these in case lots because all my vehicles and my families all take the same one. Just wanna make sure so I don't have a surprize in 3000 miles.
