Uhh, you are not supposed to get money back when you BUY one, just when you sell one. I don't know, my Dakota would have cost $18,000 when it was new, and I paid $17,000 for it after a year had passed and 10,000 miles. I don't know of to many other cars that only lose $1000 in value the first year. Of course the sticker price on my truck would have about $22,000, maybe that is what you are comparing? You have to take into account what the trucks actually sell for new, not the suggested price. If you paid too much new then it's your own fault.

Really? Man, check the Blue Book values... Daks and Rams hold their values among the best! Sure, they drop a -lot- in the first year. All vehicles do, but they level off somewhat after that.

Resale depends a lot on the body style. A dealer near me was selling a '00 4.7, only 22k miles, loaded with the electronic overhead console and everything else, for $2k - $3k less than other Daks with more miles and less equipment. The difference? This one was a regular cab.

I work part time for an auto auction and talk to many dealers about this sort of thing. All I know about re-selling Daks is basically this.

You will get more money from selling your Dakota if....

1. It is a 4X4 vs a 4X2, this instantly adds $2000 bucks to the resale value of any truck if its in decent condition.

2. The interior is incredibly clean. Having your interior professionally detailed will yield upwards of a $200-$700 difference in price.

3. Major visible flaws like Cracked windshields, dents, paint chips, smudges, rust... ect... HAVE to be cleaned up or fixed in order to produce the kind of figures that you are looking to get. Any dealership will deduct about $250 off your trade in value if your windshield is cracked, but most insurance companies will replace it for free... so get it done before trading in.

4. The less work that a dealership has to do on the truck the more they will pay you. Obvious things like burnt out dash lights/indicator lights, plastic interior scratches and carpet stains will hurt you bad in the trade in. If you turn your Truck in in the best condition that it is possible to get and is ready to be parked on the lot... then you will get a really high trade in value.

5. Never use Armor-all on your interior when trading it in... this is a true sign of a amatuer.

Just a few tips... if you want some really sneaky professional advice.... email me at scurvydog@comcast.net.

Mr. Sleepy, just curious but what else would you use on the interior besides armor-all? Not being a smartass or anything but would just like to know.

The resale of Dakotas in the Great Lakes Region where I live is excellent. S-10's and Rangers are everywhere, but a clean used Dakota with the right equipment (auto, air, V8 or V6) and the right color and mileage brings top dollar.
And like Hersbird said, so many people compare resale to the MSRP plus the sales tax, not the actual transaction price after rebates and discounts.

Those pointing out that a CC brings more then a RC and a 4x4 more then a 4x2... well duh! An equally optioned 4x4 will cost at least $2500 more then a 4x2, the MSRP is over $3000 more. A CC initialy will cost almost $2000 more then a RC with otherwise the same options. So even with the same motor and transmission, and option content a CC 4x4 will be almost $5000 more new then a RC 4x2. The most basic Dakotas even now can be found for about $11,000 brand new and I guarentee, kept nice, those 4x2 4 banger RC's will actually lose the least amount over 5 years of ANY mass produced car or truck you can buy. I'm not talking a percentage but the actual dollar number lost. look at all the basic 97-98 Dakotas out there that still sell for a good $6000, those trucks were well under $10,000 new... $3500 in 5 years I think beats just about anything.
