Subject: Weird motor growl? IP: Logged
Message: I have noticed on my '02 4.7 4x2 that sometimes the motor gets a weird tone to it from time to time. The noise generally occurs when the motor is really hot... I think. It has only happened a couple of times in the 3-4 months that I have owned the truck. It is very intermitent. This last time I was running pretty hard up the mountains from Phoenix to Flagstaff in 100+ degree heat. Generally when I would get to the top of a hill the noise start up. After a little bit it would settle back down again. The noise is really hard to explain, other than saying the motor starts to growl. My first thought was a problem with the transmision/torque converter. But, it might just be the fan kicking in. Do these '02s have an overdrive pulley system for the cooling fan? I know some trucks with tow packages have been known to have a dual speed mechanical fan. Or, is there something else I should be considering... like a catastrophic motor or tranny failure?

Message: There is some kind of thermostat built into the mechanical fan you can see the coil on the front of it.

Message: Hey, mine has done the same in the little over 2 months that I've had it it's happend twice. I think it's just the fan, mine is an '02 4.7 CC Sport and it has the tow package so we're probably hearing the same sound

Message: If the truck has an "over-drive" fan clutch in it I am 99% shure that is the issue. I wasn't aware that my truck had that type of setup. I will need to check the fan clutch... but it definitely sounds like the fan is going into overdrive until it cools the motor off.
Thaks for the input!

Message: I travel the same Rt17 from Phx to Flag in the summer but my 97 5.2 never gets over 200 degrees. I never hear the sound. Hope you figure it out.
