Subject: CW... Cam Grinds?
IP: Logged

Message:
CW, I was reading a recent post in which you mentioned taking your stock cams and "adding lift" to them. I am curious how that is done. I don't know all that much about cam design and technology, but it seems a bit counter-intuitive to be able to "add" lift by removing material. Did I read your response wrong or am I just that clueless about cam technology.

I am still debating the idea of doing the HO cam swap in my truck...

You add lift by running a smaller base circle... It's a regrind... With that, you'll need to run longer pushrods to counteract the smaller base circle diameter of the cam.

I can get you a cam setup from Crower for $200.00... New cams for $280.00... I am running a .512/512 custom cam from Crower now (regrind)... Love it!

Good explanation r/tdkota, but CW has a 4.7,
thus no pushrods.

Good explanation there R/T dkota except the pushrods. ;) Basically you grind it off of the bottom side of the cams and not the lobe lift part. Thus making the distace from the rest position to the top of the lobe a greater difference.

I had always heard they added braze to the lobes and ground that the right shape. Sounded complicated to me, adjusting the rockers to the low side ground down wound indeed seem like a better way to go.

Todd idiot- I have had reground cams were they were covered in spray metal(what ever that is) and reground to my specs which were more aggresive than a regrind of just stock material would allow. I wounder if the shop I had do it for my car could do my dak? makes me wonder.

This is for the experienced builder IMO. If you come up with a grind that is to agressive for the springs they will fail causing the whole engine to fail. You will have a valve in piston engine. If the specs are set with to much duration the piston to valve clearance could be comprimised and then you have bent valves. Go with the HO cams unless you are willing to chance engine damage.

Thanks Co, but those better be some Hellified heads for $1500, WOW! I don't think I'll be that rich for a while. If I do any thing, I'll pull mine off and do a DIY port and polish. Will not do the valves, but more flow is more flow.

Thanks Again,

$1500 is a bit much for a set of heads. I like the cams that are coming out though. 28 hp? Thats pretty amazing. As far as the computer goes. I wish someone would come out with a "plug n play" type of a set up. Who has time to send their computer away for a week?

27 days!!! Man i'd be screwed if I went without a car for that long. I think i'd go insane. Even renting a car for that long would cost a ridiculous amount. "Plug n Play" is where its at.

The heads for 1500 is a fully assembled (valves springs, everything) head, not just a head. The advantage to that is something like this:

estimated time for a full port/polish/valve cut/the works: 40 hours. That means someone is going to have the heads to your engine for a week at least. If I don't have my truck for a week, alot of people are going to wonder where I am. It'll take all of one day at a shop to change out the heads. Anyone who really wanted heads, and was in a situation like mine, might go for something like that - just drop 2 grand on the whole works, and then a couple hundred to have a shop do it for you one day, and you're done. But you're right, thats still a lot of money.

still, I am guessing that the $1500 heads
would probably produce upwards of 30 HP,
and would work very well with the HO cams.
the NX kit looks very tasty aswell, so for a little
over $2000, I could have as much, if not more
power than a supercharger, that would put me
out $4000. A mild port-polish job on stock
heads should produce a 20-30HP gain I think
thats what duner claimed mated with the turbo
setup. these look like HO heads ported and
polished, I am surprised Jonas hasnt been
on here raving about them, he must have a
set installed and dyno'd in his truck already.

$2000 for a 50 shot NX kit and heads is now a
very tempting option. plus, I would only need
to use the nitrous at the track, so my motor
wouldnt take as much of a beating compared
to having a K/B on there 24/7.
