Subject: 4.7 electric fan failure? IP: Logged
Message:
I just noticed that the auxiliary electric fan on my 2000 4.7 automatic is not operating. This on a 100-degree day in the mountains. Temperature gauge reading over 212.
I checked the fusebox but didn't see anything obviously out.
Any ideas?

Message: This happened to me last month. I noticed my truck heating up pretty good (~240) only to find my fan not working. I got a code p1491 saying the relay for the electric fan was shot. I decided to take it to the dealership so they could fix it, along with a squeak, all under warranty. The dealership called me the next day telling me I had a short in my PCM. Got a new PCM and new relay. Hasn't seen above 200 since.
I'm not saying your problem is the same, but this is what happened to me when I had those symptoms.
good luck!

Message: I've gone thru 4 or 5 of those fan relays so far. Mine end up melting and looking like somebody tried to weld with it. If you are on the road and the relay quits like that again... you can steal the one from the fog lights if you have them. Everything takes the same relays. I actually carry a jumper wire with me to make the fan run at all times if I'm at the track. This will set a check engine light... telling you that the relay is bad. No big deal, just reset the PCM when you're done.

Message: Duner, could you please give some more info about using a jumper wire to turn your elec fan on? I run at the track also and would like to use the fan to cool the engine while in the staging lanes.
Thanks!

Message: I've had the same problem with the relays. Looks like they didn't use one with enough capacity for the cooling fan.
Tried to find a replacement at the auto parts but they think you may only be able to get it from DaimlerChrysler. I refuse to do that and get ripped off.
There is a replacement made by Bosch (part # 0-332-207-307) but its hard to find also, costs about $4.
I'm going to replace mine with a larger(40amp) Bosch model and rewire the relay box to make it fit.
I have two Dodge vehicles and it seems every time I need a part, the dealer is the only one that has it. I like the vehicles and they have served me well, but I won't buy any more DC products just for that reason.

Message: Another alternative is to install an adjustable thermostatic switch ... then you can dial it in to when you want it to turn on, anywhere from 160 up to 200 something as far as I can tell.

Message: I got mine from a local shop here called 'Mopac' (yes mopac, not mopar) ... you should be able to get one at any local performance parts store .. there's a few different brands out there too .. the Flexalite was just the cheapest.
