Subject: 340 Magnum IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1969 340 I was wanting to put in my '93 5.2 Dakota....Was wandering if I could use my Magnum heads and fuel injection on the 340 short block? Will the cam and lifters for Magnum engines work in the 340 block? Any advice would be welcomed.....Steve

Message: Not really because they changed the way the engine is oiled. Pre92 motors had oil passages in the heads and newer are oiled through the pushrods. The reason is the switch for shaft mounted rocker arms to stud mount ones. Hughes engines inc.(www.hughesengines.com) has parts and info. choosing the right stuff. He says the r/t heads are the only heads worth the trouble of the swap.

Message: The Mag heads will out flow the 340 heads under about 500 lift. Even the 202 X heads. And the velocity is way higher, which makes more power. All you need to do is get a set of Jeep lifters and Mopar performance push rods to put the heads on a 340. The only problem I know of that you might run into is the crank sensor mounted on the back of the engines. I'm not for sure how it is fastened. And then your cam profile will have to work with the fuel injection, which you can get a cam ground for a 340 with the same specks as the Mag engines. If the crank sensor on the back of the engine bolts on, there should be no problem as the timing chain cover, water pump, and everything else on the Mag will interchange. PS. If you go over 500 lift on the street, you are going way to far anyway. You can run mid 12's with a 318 with a vehicle weight up to 3250 with a Mopar Performance cam shaft that has 455 lift. I know it will work on the 340's also. Just don't try to get tricky and get into the bigger is better syndrom. As long as everything is put together properly, these engines with the 455 lift work great. But with the fuel injected engines you can use the big Mopar Performance cam shaft grind (part # 5007551) and easily make over a hp per cubic inch. But you would have to have a cam shaft ground with these specks to fit the 340 block.

Message: Hell ya it will work. Just put a little JB weld on it then sprinkle it with loc-tite liberally and all will be fine. Don't forget the bushel basket for anything that might fall off.

Message: first off, you can put a set of magnum heads on any short block of the LA family. no big deal. the only difference is the way the heads oil, but that can be gone around just as easy as bolting it all together. all you need to do is get a Crane Retrofit cam and lifter kit(which is roller by the way), and call the Mopar Perf. Tech line and ask them the length of the pushrod to use for an LA block with Magnum heads. ive built a few magnum headed, LA motors but i dont remember the exact length of the pushrods. the crank sensor mounts to the right bank rear of the block and goes through the bellhousing of the trans. im sure some fabrication is not out of your league. if you need help i can figure something out for ya.
