Subject: 318 exhaust leak: please help! IP: Logged
Message: I have done everything I can think of. Somwhere in the engine compartment, there is an exhaust leak. I have already put on a gasket where the manifold meets the block and still nothing. I felt the bolts that attach the y-pipe to the manifolds and they are tight. What else can I do? The ticking sound is driving me nuts! I am pretty sure its an exhaust leak because when I hear the ticking under the hood, I can hear it out the tail pipe too. Please help.

Message: that could be an intake leak as well, or at the y-pipe for that matter. You sure its an exhaust leak?

Message: No, not too sure. How can I tell if its an intake leak?

Message: if the exhaust manifold gasket was leaking at one point, it could have warped the exhaust manifold, causing the exhaust manifold gasket to leak shortly after you replace it. try puting two sets of exhaust manifold gaskets on the side that you think is leaking, that will take care of the problem if it is warped.

Message: What kind of gasket did you put on? Back in the olden days they made 'header gaskets', which are fairly thick and are good for stopping small leaks. I think they still sell them.

Message: I too have an exaust leak somewhere in my engine compartment. I however have headers that i have installed. My leak sounds like it is coming from the bypass pipe (pipe on rear part of header) on the passenger side header (manifolds have this too). I felt around that area while the engine was running and could feel slight air coming from that pipe. Maybe thats it.

Message: check your manifold for holes cause i bought some summit headers about a month ago and had a leak and pulled them off and put a new gasket and then relized there was a split by the block flange in the header tube.... but because i already painted them and put them on i could return them so i was pretty pissed about that

Message: With the engine running, have someone plug your taipipe tightly with a rag. Then you can feel around your manifold or wherever with your hand to find out where the leak is. you will easily be able to pinpoint wher the leak or leaks are coming from.

Message: RY and HOE,
I don't know what year model each of your dakotas are, but I noticed an exhaust leak on my 318, when I was changing my oil the other day, it is a cracked manifold on the passenger side. Since this happened, I was thinking about replacing the stock manifolds with headers.
My question is, how difficult is the installation of the headers.

Message: Run a small amount of transmission fluid through the intake. It will smoke like crazy for a few minutes and you can easily spot the exhaust leaks by looking to see where the smoke is coming out.

Message: I have a ticking noise from under the hood that when I excelerate it gets louder, but once I am on the interstate, I hear nothing. and the same goes for when the truck is not moving. Runs perfect. Is there anyway to tell if this is the lifters or otherwise? I would guess exhaust leak. Any ideas?

Message: I would bet it is a cracked manifold. Take it to an exhaust shop thay are usually pretty good about pinpointing those damn hairline cracks that you just can't see!!!
