Subject: Clutch fan and electric fan operation? IP: Logged
Message: I was checking out some posts from last year on the Dodge Dakota webpage regarding "clutch fans on the 4.7L's". I had a couple of questions about the operation of the clutch fan and the backup electric fan that these 4.7L's.
I have a 2000 4.7L CC 4X4 without any sort of tow package. I have the SLT but no exterior extra coolers(tranny, oil or ps). If you have a 2000 you know that they have numbers on the temp gauge(210 degrees being the middle of the gauge). I have noticed that my truck with 37,000 miles now goes up to 210-215 degrees normally know when I am in stop and go traffic, or driving normally. Is this normal for these trucks or should it be consistently, at all times, be below the 210 mark? The coolant is full and still clean. When I move or am not stopped, the temp will be back at 195 though so I know the coolant isnt bad or rad clogged, etc. My question is....how does the electric fan work and what temp does it activate??
Also, i noticed at idle, at 210 degrees, the electric fan was on but the clutch fan was very slow moving. At what temp does the clutch fan reengage and work WITH the electric fan??? Thanks for your help am trying to diagnose a possible problem that could get bigger with time.

Message: have you switched to a 180 thermostat? I
have a 2001, so there is no indication of temp,
just a needle and a low/high gauge. but the
elec fan kicks in when the needle hits the
middle of the gauge. you can wire a switch to
turn on the elec fan manually, that way you can
run it all the time.

Message: D,
What kind of electric fan did you get? Was the install difficult? Thanks.
