Message: I would avoid gear drives. They tend to fly apart when you can least afford to have your engine self destruct. I would get a true double roller timeing chain. This is about as good as it gets. Try to get one that is adjustable.

Message: I believe Milodine (spelling?) makes one for our motors. Check Jegs or Summit. Personaly I think the other brands look stronger, but unfortunatly they aren't made for our application.

Message: Gear-Drives do not come apart...ran one on a BB Chevy years ago that was capable of twisting 6500+rpm without any problems. (That's why I switched to a gear drive anyway...timing chain didn't like the quick rpm's and stretched too fast.)
Milodon is the only company that has a single idler gear drive for the SB Mopars. Yes, it will fit on the Magnum engines as well but it's also really noisy. It doesn't sound like the Pete Jackson gear drives (blower whine sound) but rather sounds like a bunch of ball bearings loose in the crankcase. Timing is VERY steady with the gear drive but removed it (after 8 months) due to the noise...had to listen for detonation and couldn't due to the single idler noise.
You can see the installation from my old website:

Message: Bernd I almost mentioned that a single idler was the way to go. The ones that I saw come apart were all dual idler systems. I can not remeber if they were Eddel Brock or Pete Jackson brand but they did come apart. Every part can break!!

Message: There's always a chance for any part breaking...from past experiences, I haven't seen a Pete Jackson dual-idler break (but that's not to say that they won't or can't).
The single idler is the only option for the SB Mopars (or V6). I looked all over for a dual idler but to no avail.

Message: Hey guys, its my first time here. I don't know if you guys would mind me asking this or not, but you guys sound pretty knowledgeable and I thought this would be the place to ask:
I recently installed a inexpensive Proform gear drive on my small block Chevy and I heard a few nights ago from a friend that he once had a 400 c.i. SBC with a gear drive (Pete Jackson) that locked up and broke pushrods, valves, etc and he was pretty ticked. He told me to take the gear drive off my car and put the double chain back on it. So I wanted to search the net for information and if anybody else had these problems with gear drives before I dropped my engine in my car and started it up. I see that some say here that they had probs and some say they didn't. Any more information on this would be greatly appreciated. But I have one question--what is the difference between a single idler and dual idler and is my Proform gear drive a single or dual? Also any imput on the Proform gear drive would be appreciated also. Thanks a lot.

Ryan, welcome to DodgeDakotas.com. I have no clue about the dependability of gear drives. But the difference between the single and dual idlers is this... When you look at the gears, you have the top cam gear and the bottom crank gear. The number of gears between the cam and the crank determine if it is single or dual.
Hope this helps

I have a 74 302 that I installed a Jackson Brothers dual idlers set on. It has performed great for over a year - I love it. Machining: there is a small lip inside the timing cover that is designed to deflect oil that must be removed(On a chain set-up it would sit in the gap between the two gear - on a gear drive this is where the idlers are now installed). I removed mine with a wiz-while attached to a gromit tool. It was simple. Just make sure that you clean all the shavings thuraly before you replace the timing cover. -Roy
