Message: yeah but computer techs are not on 20/20 actually showing them ripping you off...hehehe
im not saying ALL mechanics rip people off, but they seem to be the most "tech's" getting caught by undercover camara's.

Message: too true kota, we do seem to be the ones that those so called "news" programs pick on. but just about half of the ones i have seen call a suggestion overselling. for instance, on your head gasket job, you also replaced the lifters, and valve stem seals( wise choice in my opinion). you did not HAVE to, but it made sense to do while it was apart. according to the "news" programs, if a shop/tech had SUGGESTED that they be replaced while the engine is apart, then the shop/tech is blasted for selling unneeded repairs.
btw, they never tell you how many shops they went to before they found some that they could blast, or do they show you all of the footage, just what they want you to see. nor do they tell you which shops they went to that did right by people, cuz of course bad sells.

Message: i have nothing against the "news" programs busting dishonest shops/techs. if they are actually dishonest and the segment is not just biased to appear that way. I, personally, have told customers to go elsewhere BEFORE the job started because it was obvious that no matter how well the job was done they would not be happy. and the shops i have worked for have been ripped off more, by customers, than it has ripped anyone off(fired one tech after 2 days caught him trying to blatantly oversell).
i do have a conscience, and i feel that with all of the cars on the road there is more than enough work to be gotten honestly. also in the shop that i work in now i would say that about 80-95% of the work is from repeat customers(would you return to a ripoff?), and ALL of our customers recieve every incentive to return for other work.
i still believe that there are AT LEAST 5 times as many honest shops/techs as there are dishonest(but i hope the ratio is more like 25 good to one bad in ALL fields), and i believe there are just as many dishonest ppl in other fields(remember the home repair scam artists on the "news" programs?)

Message: verry good points. i dont really see how overselling is that bad though. i can see if you told someone you HAVE to replace a part when they dont. but if you suggest it, and let them decide, that puts the decision on them, and actually makes you look better.
the things that i have seen on TV is like a tech telling someone that there alternator is bad when it is not, and instead of replacing it, the just clean it off, and put it back on and charge him/her for a new one.
i agree with you 100% when you say "i feel that with all of the cars on the road there is more than enough work to be gotten honestly."
i wish everyone in ALL feilds had that view!!

Message: overselling is selling parts that are not bad by telling the customers that they are. upselling is recommending or suggesting other parts/services to make the customer happier with the job/car. IMO all overselling shops/techs(in all fields) should be prosecuted, after all it is theft, however the consumer should be educated enough to know the difference thereby avoiding it alltogether. BOTTOM LINE as a consumer, to avoid being taken, ASK QUESTIONS if you are unsure of any repair if the answers dont seem right or if the tech cant explain it well enough that you can understand it, WALK AWAY. there are other shops/techs.
in the shop i work at(and all others that i have worked at) any and all work IS the customers decision, and any diagnostic fees are explained up front, and the customer MUST approve the work/diagnostics before any work is done on the veicle. even my regulars that walk in and say "dont worry about the price, just fix it" get a phone call before being charged any $$$$$(waaaayyyy less hassle for them and me that way)
