Subject: Stupid New Guy Questions... IP: Logged
Message: I'm an idiot, I know that already so bear with me. This is my first rig, 02 QuadCab 4x4 with the 5.2 engine, and I'm looking to make it better, ie. faster more power the usual, but not so modded out that I need to screw with it too much. I'm thinking of ram air and exhaust to start out with unless I can be learned different...
First off, I haven't read many posts about the 5.2, did I get the worst of both worlds? Not as much power as the 5.9 and rev of the 4.7?
I was looking at some hoods for the rig and I saw that a hood along with K&N filter, air box and fittings is advertised to add 15-20 ponies. What kind of intake is best and is there a best hood style that would go with it, or is that left to personal choice? It also has "heat extractors" as an add-on to extract heat I believe. Are these good or necessary? Worth the money?
I've read that the exhaust if a balance between torque and speed. I live in Alaska and I am looking forward to pulling 747's and what-not off of the side of the highway this winter, so torque is a good thing. Has anyone found a decent balance for torque and speed with the intake and exhaust?
What is the PCM? Photon Correcting Masonator? What does it do and which one is best. How does it affect the torque/speed balance?
I am not in the habit of exposing myself to people, so why would I "flash" my truck? I love my rig, but I don't think that I am willing to take it quite that far. What is flashing and why and when is it necessary?
I'm looking to changing out the tires and getting bigger rims. I have the stock P265/70r16 Goodyear RTS on it and was wondering how wide it is possible to go. Anyone found a size that just seems to fit just right? 17's, 18's and what magic width seems to work good.
Basically I want my rig to be strong, be fast, and be headache free. I work out of town and only get to drive one week out of three and look forward to driving as much as possible. Is there anything out there that I shouldn't get so that I don't have to fiddle around so much with stuff that I'll just end up breaking anyway?

Message: hate to break it to you but if you have a 2002 model, you either have a 5.9L or a 4.7L, In fact a QC never had a 5.2L since the QC came out in 2000 and the same year is when they started putting the 4.7L as a replacement for the 5.2L.
you don't have a 3.9L V6 do you?
Once you figure that out you can get more help

Message: First off:
You have a 4.7L 2002 QC not a 5.2L. The 5.2L ended in 1999. The 4.7L started late 1999 and after.
For performance options got to
krcperformance.com
speedtweaks.net
truckperformance.com
AND REMEMBER:
The only engines you could possibly have are the
2.5L
3.9L
4.7L
5.9L
The 5.2L is no longer available.

Message: OK...I felt that I just had to prove my idiocy. 4.7 is in there...I don't know why I've had 5.2 stuck in my head. Now that that is cleared up any pointers? Thanks for the links...

Message: Start with the intake. The K&N Fipk for the 4.7 is way over priced. Its somethin like $250 for 5-7rwhp. Most other intakes will give you the same. roar inc. has dynoed 12rwhp from their intake but it costs $330. $600+ if you want the hyperfilter attachment. Its all carbon fiber. I don't know anyone who has one.
Then get a carsound cat and swap it in for your 3rd cat. Then get a highflow muffler and swap it in for your existing. Don't change your pipe diameter.
Then get a 180t-stat and 3923 autolites. These will merely let your engine run smoother.
Then get a 68mm or larger TB. After restrictions your existing TB is actually only a 65mm. Fastman.com has 68 and 71 TB's for $200. I have the 68mm and I like it. If you want a shiny billet TB get a 68, 70, or 72mm F&B from speedtweaks.net or socaldakota.com.
There are electric fans out there as well as flashes for your PCM(your trucks brain). Flashes can be had for $349.00(ASE) up to around $600 (B&G). The kenne bell optimizer is probably the best at around $400.
Headers aren't really worth it unless you are going to get forced induction. Paxton or Kenne Bell.

Message: Has anyone used the RAID intake? Is what they are claiming real?
Any suggestions for muffler?
Exactly what would a bigger throttle body do for the rig? How big is too big and what happens if you get too big?
What is a "flash"? What does a flash do? Do the electric fans do anything other than cool the PCM?

Message: The Air Raid is just a cold-air intake system, same at the 360 Intakez and the K&N FIPK. I've got the 360 one and it makes a big difference...
for mufflers, its kind of up to you. You can get a Flowmaster, a Gibson, Magnaflow...etc.
The Flowmaster, I've heard, is loud inside and outside of the cab. Gibson makes several bolt on cat-back exhaust packages (www.gibsonperformance.com) and I can't tell you about Magnaflow.
A larger TB will allow more air to flow into the engine thus increasing fuel efficiency, throttle response and power/torque. If you go larger, the only side-effect is more air.
A 'flash' is sort of like reprogramming your trucks brain. By using a flash, you can alter shift points, air/fuel mixture, etc. This will inturn give you more hp/torque, faster launches, its a good thing, if you find the right one.
Hope this helps out somewhat.
