Well as some of yall MIGHT remember, I'm still lookin to buy my truck, I found one

http://www.getauto.com/cardetail.html?vin=1B7GL22N9YS749292

I drove it twice, I and my uncle both looked it over, seems great, only a couple of cosmetic things (scuff, chip in windshield, etc) and no mechanical problems at all from what we can tell.

I got the dealer down to 15,200 + ttl, 16,600 off the lot, after all taxes and crap are done.

This seems really good price given the low miles and great condition. I checked kbb.com and it said retail expected price is about 18,300 or something, I don't remember right now. Trade in though was only around 13,500 I believe. This is my first time buying a car on my own, I can't afford to get screwed. What would you guys do? I can afford 16,600, yes, but would you think its WORTH it?

AS A FELLOW 19 YEAR OLD, I SPECIAL ORDERED A 03 QUAD CAB ON FRIDAY. IF YOU ARE BUYING USED...TAKE YOUR TIME AND BUY FROM AN INDIVIDUAL, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOUR STATE BUT IN GA, YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY TAXES ON USED CARS ONLY IF YOU BUY FROM AN INDIVIDUAL. GET A BANK LOAN AND PAY HIGHER INTREST RATES IF YOU HAVE TO...YOU CAN ALMOST NEVER GET A GOOD DEAL FROM A DELEAR - THEY WILL SCREW YOU ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. TAKE YOUR TIME AND FIND ONE FROM AN INDIVIDUAL.

I can't afford new, I have to pay for college, insurance, and gas to GET to college 3 days a week.

This is about as close to new as I will get, but it's in REALLY nice shape, and is exactly what I've wanted. I've been looking since May, all over texas, on autotrader/ebay, getauto, yahoo, and carmax, and have found only one other black CC 4.7, with a LOT higher miles and for the same price.

From a poor kids standpoint, is this a good price? :\

Hahah, my local dealer tried to screw me -- I'm 18 -- he knew this was my first vehicle purchase. Showed that bastard when I went elsewhere.

How come it's listed as a 4.7L, but that picture looks like it had a V6 badge on it?? lol.

Walt,
Go for it. It's a good price. I paid more for my 2K CC, which is 4x4 but has more miles. Could you find one for less from an individual? Prolly, but how long would you have to search, how far would you have to drive, etc? The dealer has to make a profit, and what you get in return is a little more convenience. It's your call. Have you run the VIN through carfax.com yet?

I would run one for you, but CARFAX finally got smart about their login process.

They use to just ask for an email, no password. I would then do a search online for dealership websites and use their email. Worked perfectly! I would log right in and look up countless amount of VINs. Bastards changed that, it seems..

Waltherone, Hey man, That sounds like a pretty good deal in my opinion. I would get it if i were you. IF u want, i can run a Carfax for you. I still have like 15 more days on my subscription. I just bought a Intense blue 2000 CC 4X4 4.7V8 a week ago with 30K miles on it and is FULLY loaded except for leather. It was blue booked at 19k, they were selling for 17,990, and i got them down to 16,500, then i got the 5 year Warranty which bumped it up to 18k even. But yeah man, i would get the truck if i were u..... only thing u MIGHT not like about it is the Gas Mileage... I get around 290 per fill up, but i also fill up when the needle gets to 1/8 notch.

GET THE TRUCK, and if u do WELCOME TO THE FAMILY.

HELL NO! Jesus 2000 dodge with 20k miles on it.... for 17.5, they can take a leap. I bought my 2002 brand new, 1 mile, 4.7 extended slt+ 4X2 with every option for 18,500. Do yourself a huge favor and take a brand new one off the lot and get 3000 cash back or 0% financing. You'll be a lot better off. Try to get a employee discount to. My opinion a truck like that is worth 14k-15k tops. Keep in mind that on average our trucks drop in value about 4000 bucks the minute they are classified as used. and more so for dents and dings. Ask about the AC system and the evaporator coil, and if its been replaced, if not heckle him another 700 bucks down in price cause its going to cost that to get it replaced. Ask about the ball joints and the timing chain. Ask about the trans, and start tinkering him down if you dead set on getting this truck. If he doesn't budge close to 15,000 or 15,500 then walk on it. You can find better.

I'll ask about the evaporator coil, but I wouldn't mind havin a 2000(can we say Mike Leach?), and also you must have some faqin MAD negotiating skills to get a brand new one fully loaded for 18...

Tell me a little more about that evaporator coil, why is it I'm supposed to ask about that? Is that something that normally has to be replaced every 20k miles or somethin??

Waltherone, you really don't need any special skills. You just tell them what you want it for this price and to take it ar leave it. They don't, you leave and go elsewhere, it's as simple as that. I was very lucky, I live semi-close to one of the largest Dodge dealers in the US. Not only are they one of the largest dealers, they have a no hassle, no haggling buying process. You order your truck, they get what you want, it's awesome. There's no reason you HAVE to buy your vehicle from them, it's your money, always remember that. Sometimes you do just want to punch them in the face and curb 'em, just a lil.

Like I said, I'm 19, I NEED a car/truck, I want a dakota, but I can in NO way, even if hell froze over and thawed out the next day, afford a new one. Now, 23k miles isn't very many, unless of course dakotas aren't reliable at all, but I doubt anyone here is going to say that, so in the grand scheme of things, given that I put on about that same amount (20-25k in 2 years) of miles, 23k miles isnt much. Some of yall make it sound like I'm buying a toyota with 190,000 miles on it. It's 23k miles, the engine is broken in and then a little more, that's it. I can afford to pay 16,600 after taxes, and this one fits what I WANT perfectly. I haven't found a whole lot of CLUB cab 4.7's for sale within my price range.

So, I'll ask again, while CONSIDERING the fact that I cannot afford new, thus making new a ridiculous answer, considering I need a vehicle NOW (school starts in 2 weeks, its a 35 mile drive 3 days a week..), and considering ALL of the other club cab's I found with the 4.7 had more miles and had a higher asking price, does this seem to be such a bad idea??

Oh and I still need to know more about that evaporator coil and why it should have been replaced or will need to be soon :)

And also, what about the timing chain am I supposed to ask about, I can't just say "So, tell me about that timing chain.."

Walt,
OK, I know you said you can't afford new, but don't rule it out until you consider that Dodge has been offering $2K rebates, a new car loan has a cheaper rate than new, and it's the end of the model year so they're looking to move the '02s out. You might have to settle for a little less equipment to get a new one in your price range, but if you can afford 15K or so, and you're getting a loan anyway, you can afford a new truck. In other words, don't just look at the price, look at what your monthly payment will be.

As far as that timing chain and the evaporator, unless somebody here knows of specific issues with those things, don't sweat 'em. What dealer is going to replace a timing chain at 23K miles just because you ask? I think Mr. Sleepy is ready for bed.

I know, but I set 15 as the MOST I could afford before tax is included. 15,200 I can handle, above that I can't handle much though. I AM looking at what my monthly payments will be, but I have a lot of other bills to pay (basically I pay EVERYTHING and only live under my mom's roof still to save on rent) and since I have school and work part time, I don't wanna go into debt at this age, the truck really is in good shape and I take damn good care of the things that I have cuz it's hard to get them, so it will last me a WHILE, I'll make sure of it. I'm sitll not sure about it anyway because it's jsut a lot of money, I've never spent this much in a lump sum before, I used to think car buying would be fun, but it SUCKS..

Oh well, thanks for the input eryone, I still got some deep thought to put into it, plus still searching just in case I find a better one..

Yeah it's good to think about it really good, but if you think this is the truck you want you should decide quikly because you dont want it to be gone if you finally decide. If this is what you have been searching for and it is what you want then go for it because all the time it might take you to find something else and the price will not be MUCH different. Good Luck with everything.

Waltherone, debt may sound like it really sucks -- and it does --, but the solid credit background you're creating at a young age will help you out lots later on.

Even with half to put down my my truck, my bank wouldn't let me get a loan; I had no existing credit history. Thankfully my parents have awesome credit and were able to co-sign with me so I could get the measly loan.

I am also going to school and working full time and know what ya mean. I don't expect to buy another vehicle untill well after college (I'm but a Freshman right now, so I have a long ways to go).

When you start getting serious with the dealer about buying a truck they will probably start offering you deals on new truck for a good price. When I was getting my '99 Dakota CC 318/a500/3.55 last year they offered me a brand new 2001 RC 4.7/ 5 speed/ 3.92 SG Dakota for the same price ($15,000)and also offered a loaded QC 4.7/ auto/3.92 Dakota for $20,000 , it was right before 9/11 and they were really hurting on they're new car sales.
