Message: How in the heck are you guys getting the filter out of the access hole without making a huge mess? Is there some type of trick?

Message: YES!
Some folks use a chopped-off plastic soda bottle to catch the mess.
Other folks remove the plastic cover alltogehter.
I am surprised you are not asking about how to drain the oil without a mess too.
answer:
Fumoto oil-drain valve
-or-
Fram "Sure-Drain" from walmart

Message: I don't have problems with the oil drain. Unless there is a trick that I don't know of, when you take filter off, quite a bit of oil drains from where the filter fits on the block and from the top of the filter itself. I pull my truck up on ramps which puts the truck at a pretty steep angle. I cleaned up the mess as much as I could on the inside of the shroud, but when I pulled off the ramps and decreased the angle more oil poured out onto the driveway that I missed. I've got to figure out a better way. I may just remove the cover, but I really hate to.

Message: cut a 2-liter bottle in half and put around the filter when hand-screwing it off. catches most if not all the oil. works pretty good. If you do a search about this you should find more posts about it.

Message: I was having the same problem with spillage, I used zip lock bags around the filter that did really work. I tried the 2 liter bottle trick, it worked like a charm, no spills.

Message: I usually just use the box the new filter comes in. Rip it down the side and fold it in half to make a gutter. Never gets oil anywhere but in the drain pan.

Message: If you don't have a 2 Liter bottle, a 1 Gal milk jug works great. It even has a built in handle.
