Subject: Dead Computer IP: Logged
Message: I own a 1997 Dakota Sport 4x4, with a 5.2L V8.
Recently it quit running (would not start) and I took it to a local shop.
They told me that the computer is dead.
Can I replace the computer myself with a junkyard piece? (meaning I do not need a special tools or diag machine to install it)
If I were to go with an aftermarket computer,
which one is recommended for basically a daily driver/work truck.
Thanx

Message: Call up speedtweaks or KRC Performance and get a Mopar Performance computer ($300) and pick up some horsepower. Probably cheaper than dealer price on a stock PCM.

Message: Hmmm, a dead coil will cause the same problem and would be a lot cheaper to replace. Had it happen to me. You might want to check that out before buying a new computer.
Wouldn't be the first time I've heard of a shop claiming a bad computer when the problem is actually something cheaper.
