Subject: when to upgrade to headers?? IP: Logged
Message: i believe that i read that the stock exhaust manifolds are good up to about 300 h.p. after that headers are needed. i can not find the post that stated this. is this true? also on the aftermarket Y pipes, what is the diameter of the single pipe. i would like to go with a full 3" exhaust from Y pipe back. will i have to get this custom fabricated?
thanks,
nathaniel

Message: Your ready for them! You will notice a nice gain in the mid-high level rpms with the headers. The factory Y pipe is just over 2". A lot of the header companies sell Y-pipes or you can have one made at your local muffler shop.
I got the PPH headers and they came with the Y-pipe. I also upgraded to 3" pipe and high flow cat.

Message: when the two banks merge into one what is the diameter of the pipe. if it is 2.5" then a 3" system out from there does me little good. what do you all think.

Message: from personal experience, the 1.7 roller rockers will give you more power for the money.
the pipe is 2 1/2" where the two meet

Message: You know everyone on this board said to stick with the stock manifolds on the 4.7 that they flow the same,I went with the JBA headers and picked up 7 RWHP and 2 1/2 MPG with the Dynomax exhaust,70mm Tb and cams.
Just keep your pipe size around 2 1/2 and you should be ok.
Go For IT!

Message: Thought you might be interested... Summit sells the Edelbrock "tubular exhaust system" (headers) complete with y-pipe, all in 409 stainless steel, for $349.99. Their website says mild steel, but Edelbrock's website says 409 stainless. I e-mailed Summit and they responded that, yes, their website is incorrect and that they are 409 stainless. This is only for, I believe, 97-98 5.2 Auto 2-wd Daks. You might take a look at www.summitracing.com

Message: Thanks for the Edelbrock info. do you all know if both banks dump into a 2.5" or 3" pipe. I would like to have a full length 3" single system. or do you think that 3" will kill my torque?? see previous post for my mods.
thanks,

Message: You might check with Edelbrock; they have a contact e-mail on their website. I think the y-pipe outlet is 3-inches.... I am curious about how much hp this would be good for, so if you go this route, definitely post results!

Message: I HAVE A 95 DAK V8 WITH MOPAR PCM 392 5SP WITH HEADERS CUT THE Y PIPE WHERE IT MERGED USED ONE ORIG CAT, ADDED A CAT AND RAN FULL DUELS OUT THE BACK WITH FLOWMASTERS. THE EXAUST RUNS DOWN THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRUCK AND THE OVAL MUFFLERS ARE INSTALLED SIDE BY SIDE VERTICALLY. PIPES GO OVER THE REAR AND EXIT UNDER THE BUMPER. I NOTICED A CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCE IN HP. ALL PIPES ARE 2.5 IN. THIS TRUCK RIPS. THE SINGLE PIPE THERY IS OK FOR V6 BUT THE 318 AND 360 LIKE THE TRUE DUELS.
