Subject: HO Cam Question
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anyone changed the cams in the 4.7 to the High OUtput cams in a 4 x 4?
I did this over the weekend, and my four wheel drive doesn't seem to work anymore.
I know it was working before. I also was told it works on vacuum?
Is it possible I no longer have enough vacuum to fully engage the 4wd? It seems like it's not going in the whole way, but is slipping a bit.

Any ideas?????

Sounds like you just missed hooking up a vacuum line,
or hooked it up wrong. But Im sure someone else will
chime in if Im wrong.

By the way, so hows the power difference? Im thinking
of putting the HO Cams in my 00 Quad Cab 4x4.

I can definately notice a difference in the mid-range, especially right after the tranny shifts, there's no hesitation at all, it just keeps on pulling.

I highly recommend it.
After reading all the posts on doing it I was a bit leary. I wasn't sure how hard it would be to do. Now, having done it, it really is incredibly easy to do. The nice thing about the 4.7 is everything almost plugs itself back in when laid in place.

I'm sold too. I can't imagine a better upgrade for 200 bucks. I'm going to do this, but it may be a month or so. I've got a robert shaw 180 stat out in the map pocket right now that I need to get around to installing, but since the odds of my wife having our first son today are pretty much 100%, that could be a few days as well. Anyhow if anyone comes up with a better price on these cams, please post because you know how saving money is good....

Check with Mopar. They had the best price when I got mine-$84 cdn each.

As for instructions, what's your email? I'll send you the ones from speedtweaks.

As for the special chain wedge they mention repeatedly, I made one out of a block of wood.

I took a wedge shaped piece of wood, covered it with tape so it wouldn't splinter, put a woodscrew in the end with a small piece of rope around the screw and used it. I didn't need the cam wedge.

I think the whole idea of do-it-yourself mods is the fun part. besides if they install them then they know the ho cams are not designed for your particular 4.7 and might void warranty.

You're right about the part #. I ended up getting 3 right side cams before I got 1 left side, all with the same #'s on them.

As for ease of installation, simple. I'd say it took roughly 2 hours in total for both sides.

Also, back to my original post, I fixed my 4wd. Turns out a $0.50 clip on the inside of the end of the axle broke, allowing the axle to slip on the shaft. Easy fix.

Now I can say te cams definately make a difference when in about 1' of mud.

I have never worked on a modern engine other than airintakes and easy stuff like that.....the HO cams took me about 4.5 hours because the passenger side cam i put on 1 link off on the sprocket so that 4.5 hours included passenger readjustment.

That's what worried me at first.
After thinking about how to do it easily, I came up with a good idea.

I had all the bolts loose on the cam, including the one holding the sprocket in place. I took all the caps off and put them aside. I then took off the sprocket, pulled the cam out of the way, and set the new cam in right away, putting the sprocket right back on. By doing this I never had the sprocket out of the chain so i couldn't move it a link. Worked great.

I made my wedge out of a piece of wood. I made it whatever size it had to be to fit. I then screwed a woodscrew in the end with a piece of small rope around it to pull it out.
It didn't seem like it needed a lot of pressure to hold the chains, and by just taking the sprocket off and putting it right back on the new cam, it reduced the chance of the chain slipping. Quite easy really.

I am getting ready to do my CAMS (this week I hope). Is there any need to drain the coolant for the cam change? Also has anyone posted directions for teh intake swap? I want to do both at once...

Thanks,

No, you don't have to drain the coolant.
I don't know about changing the intake, but it seems as though it would be a pretty straight forward job.

Try ordering them from this dealership;

Metro Dodge
3821 Stone Mountain Highway
Snellville, GA 30039

Cams were $73.60 EA and the HO Intake was $161. Pretty good prices, I think.
