Subject: Buying new truck, need motor advice!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, i'm getting a new dakota here in the next few days and i need some help/advice/expertice.

i was originally planning to get the 3.9L and start a high performance buildup of a 5.9L to drop in. the only thing is, i found the EXACT truck i was looking for on the lot, except it is the 4.7L.

here is my problem. i know NOTHING about the 4.7L since all i was ever interested in was the 360. i don't even know what mods exist for the 4.7L.

whatever i get is going to be built up ALOT, so i was just wondering if i would be better off (performance wise) dropping in the 360 or should i go with the 4.7L on the lot???

ANY info is very much appreciated.

i would go with the 4.7 you will be able to find plenty of parts for it plus you dont want to buy a new truck just to swap engines. go with the 4.7 and you will get a warrenty to cover the motor.

just my $0.02

i haven't seen too many sites listing high performance 4.7L mods, are there any?? i don't mean just bolt-ons, i'm talking about cams, intake manifolds, oversize pistons, rods, crank, etc. also, the 4.7L has a different ignition, doesn't it??

also, if i tear into the motor and put high performance parts in, will it still be covered by warranty??

the 360 i'm planning on dropping in isn't going to be mildly built up. it's going to be bored and stroked to 408 ci and i'm using forged pistons so i can get it nitrous injected and maybe supercharged or -- dare i say it -- twin turbocharged.

If you're going to buy a truck and immediately tear into it to make a 408 stroker with nitrous and forced induction, then you don't even need to mess with the 4.7 truck. There's only a few options out for this brand new motor. You could easily put a supercharger on the 4.7 and make about 300-325 horspower with no other mods. If you modify it and then supercharge, you are looking towards 350-375 hp. There are some weak links that need to be taken care of like the pistons before you can get radical.

The 4.7 motor is about efficient power, not brute force with a blunt instrument. There is one guy with a home-brew turbo'd 4.7 that makes an estimated 450 hp, but that's a true study in self control. It won't make that much power without race gas and some track-only tuning, but it's a hell of an example.

But if you are looking to supercharge or turbo a 408 motor (it sounds like you are looking to make about 550-650 hp), then you should start with a 5.9 motor and take it to a machine shop.As for ripping open a brand new motor and starting over with a whole new rotating assembly, I wouldn't go looking for a warranty there. Unless you have it professionally assembled (and that's looking like about a $7500-$9000 proposition with forced induction).

To be honest with you, I'm not sure why you'd buy a brand new truck and then rip out the drivetrain. I'd go find a 2-3 yr old version and by that one for a whole lot cheaper. Then you have that money to put into your nitrous/forced/stroker truck.

But that's up to you. Sounds like you know what you're doing......

The 4.7 has cams that are fairly easy to change compared to a 3.9/5.2/5.9. Bigger throttle body, air intakes, headers and cat backs. So this would be a good choice and the more 4.7s that are made, the more mods that will come available.

Yeah then you could just order a crate motor and drop it into an empty shell. Seems like kind of a waist to tear into a brand new motor.

And there is NO WAY that any dealership is going to warranty you turning a 235 or 250hp motor into a 500hp mega beast. You may be able to get an after market warranty from AAA auto club or something like that.

The 4.7L is a good overall choice, but it's still kinda new for all the available performance parts. It has the potential to be bored and stroked (plenty of case room/clearance), but there's not any aftermarket pistons out there right now. It's kinda strange due to it's all new bore and stroke size (3.66 bore x 3.405 stroke), but that shouldn't stop anyone from making or having made custom cranks and pistons. As a matter of fact, I'm almost positive that I heard someone was getting Keith Black custom pistons made as we speak (but I just can't remember who the hell it was). There's plenty there for it to make obscene amounts of power N/A. In a year or two it'll be where we need it to be (as far as aftermarket performance goes).

I ended up going with the 3.9L V6. (Changed username cause it's 2 wheel drive) I'm actually picking up a 360 tomorrow so I can start my buildup. The warranty will definately be shot, but if I do everything right, I really shouldn't have to worry about something going wrong.
A bunch of people probably think I'm retarded for tearing into a brand new truck, but here's what I'm thinking:
I could have bought an R/T. But what is the R/T package?? Bigger motor, lowered a little, bigger wheels, and full power or whatever. Anyways, I'm going to lower it 3/5, put 20 inch wheels on it, and do a huge buildup of the motor. So I'd essentially be paying about $7,000 for stuff that I'd be pulling off anyways and then have my truck down for a LONG time when I do the motor work.
Also, I don't have the money right now to drop it all at once into the motor, so I figure build it up over the next year or so. That will also give me time to get a new rear end and maybe a new tranny.
Bottom line: I am going to dog the sh!t out of whatever I drive, so I figured just build it to suit my driving style.

Save the V6 and Transmission. Disconect the engine harness from the cmputer and save everthing. This way when you hand grande the 360 or decide to sell it you can put the the V6 back in it. When i store an engine like this I do one of two things. I build a stand for the engine and block off every opening that fluid can leak out of. Then fill it full of oil. I mean full right up to the top of the intak mainfold. You have to use sheet metal and rtv to close off every opening. We used to use fish oil to do this to aircraft engines. The other method is to tear the engine down to major assembles and use cosmoline to grease everything and then reassemble or package in anti-corrisive paper. You can store parts like this for 45++ years with no corroson as long as you can keep them pretty dry (no mist or stading water on parts).

The 4.7 runs 15.5-15.9 (depends on traction) in the 1/4 stock. I'd call it quick, but not quite fast.
