Subject: Emergency advice, re: 4.7 5-speed
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm taking my 2001 4.7, 5-speed into the dealer later today or tomorrow. It has about 7,000 miles and these are the problems: 1. odd sound when turning sharply into drive-ways etc. - ball joint? 2. Brake "tap" just as I put my foot on them 3. Transmission "Thud" when the clutch is released - 90% of the time.

Before I go in, how much of this is the nature of the beast, and what needs to be fixed?

Thanks for any info/advice

Dangit Man....None of that stuff sounds commonplace to me...I have a 2000 4.7 5-spd, just turned 13,000 miles. The only problem I've had, was a clock-spring in the air-bag sensor needed to be replaced (recall item). No clicking or thuds when turning into driveways. The 5-speed sometimes has a little hum to it in 3rd gear, but drives fine.

I hope it's all a figment of your imagination, and not a lemon...But if it is...You're under warranty...
ball joints should not be screwed with under 10,000 miles on the truck.

Good Luck.

No, definitely not imagination. You can hear me shifting from a block away. It's fine when I turn the radio up, but otherwise...

Besides the already mentioned problems (and the gas mileage) it's a great truck. Beats my old one by a long shot.

I've got that annoying hard-left pop as well with only 3500 miles on an 02 quad cab. Wife has heard it too.

I gave my suspension and steering a pretty good workout when I took my stock RC 2WD 4.7L 5spd through the SCCA SOLO II course a few weeks ago. It was SILENT, my passengers didn't even hear any odd sounds, so any sounds you hear are wrong and shouldn't be there -- even under extreme instances. Get it checked out and fixed for sure!

Mine had the weird suspension sound when hitting bumps at turned wheel and when I locked the wheel. There were two loose bolts on the control arm and they retorqued them. But this was after I hit two big rig tires on the highway.

I also have a pop when turning left, just started about a week ago, so it is not normal. Having the dealer check it out tomorrow. Will post findings.

Well, I took my truck into to the dealer to find out about this popping in the steering. Turns out they have to replace the steering rack entirely. My symptoms were: tie rod boot on the passenger side steering rack was oily, from the inside, out; and a pop when turning left. At least it's warranty!

I've only heard a pop when turning like maybe 3 times since I've owned the truck, but I still have this heavy rattle on roads with coarse pavement. I need to take it in for that and make the service guy ride with me.

Iman, You wouldn't happened to have taken it to Ferrero's did you? Have you put a body lift on yet? Just wondering if Ferrero's gave you any grief for it. BTW, I still haven't called about pricing on the shifter boot retaining ring, but I went ahead and did a tiny bit of trimming and shifting is great.

I just got my 2002 4.7 5-speed dakota a little over 2 months ago and I'm already having problems with it. It has about 6000 miles on it (it had 9 when I took delivery).
When I hit a bump on my left hand side, it sounds like the mounting hardware for the shocks are popping lose...that's the best way I can describe it.

I also have electrical problems...sometimes when I turn on the truck, the power windows don't work and the headlights don't work. I turn the truck off, let it sit for about 30 seconds and fire it back up and everything is fine.

I hear a "clunk" from my transmission every once in a while when I'm shifting from second to third.

I'm constantly grinding 2nd and 3rd. I'm not really sure if it's me or the tranmission. I tend to think it's the tranmission because I've been driving stick shift vehicles since I was 15. I've owned three cars in my life, all of which of have been stick shift and I have NEVER had a problem grinding gears.

And lastly, when I turn on the truck first thing in the morning, there's a big puff of smoke.

Now I just have to find some time to bring it in :/

Damn, that's a whole heap of problems. I've just had a tailgate handle and an auto belt tensioner. Both of which were pretty petty things too, but still needed to be fixed.
