Subject: Leak! What is it?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2001 regular cab 2WD with about 26,000 miles. I just noticed a small leak that stops after the engine quits running. it is a brown color w/ the consistency of water. It leaks after the cat in the exhaust. Basically right under the cab. I have no muffler cuz i have dual exhaust. It is at a connection in the pipe about a foot past the cat. Im just wondering what it is and if it is supposed to be in my exhaust? I appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thank you very much!

Also if it is a tranny leak, what would be the likely way they would fix it? Would it be expensive? thanx for the input

No man your under warranty. Your ehaust mod won't have any effect. (that is if it's is a tranny leak, and your exhaust hasn't rubbed on the pan causing it to leak) it sound like it's just a seal or gasket.

no, what I'm saying is unless the exhaust is rubbing the trans pan or near the leak, they might try and blame the exhaust on the problem. (I was just making a remotely possible thing that would cause them to void it)

This leak of yours, is it coming out of the exhaust at a spot where one pipe goes into another? If so, you might have a slight exhaust leak letting discolored (Brown) water seep from it.

Hey! Mechanic Mike it is at the at the point when one pipe goes into another. and ive determined its just moisture w/ a rusty color so i think it just is an exhaust leek and nothing more severe. IS that what you think?

its not big enough that i can feel any air exiting but around the seal after the engine is running it drips enough just to make a spall little puddle about 3 inches in diameter. i also think it is just an exaust leak because when i pull it into the garage cuz i can smell the fumes a lot stronger. So mechanic mike, did this sound like an exhaust leak to you? thanks for your help!

Yep, It sure does sound like a small leak. It is nothing that I would be too concerned with. Its small enough just to let water seep through.

P.S. Your welcome. Glad I could help.

If it feels like water it probably is water. And, yes, you do have water in your exhaust, its a result of the combustion. The leak may just be out of your exhaust...its brown due to carbon (another byproduct of combustions). Find the point in the exhaust pipe that it appears to be coming from, start up your truck and feel if exhaust is coming out.

The leak is not large enough to feel the exhaust but it is enough to let the water seep through and also the fumes are much stronger because of the small leak.

I can tell you that this is water! your exhaust
system heats and cools rapidly, remember
science class? what air does this, its ability to
hold water decreases. Anyways your system
just sweats on the inside, this is normal. On
non stainless systems, to keep the system
from rusting from the inside out, a small hole
is drilled in the lowest point of the system (i
noticed one on the factory system before I
threw it away, this allows the water to drain
and dry the pipes.
First thing in the morning, have someone start
your truck and watch drips of water come out
of your pipes. Its normal.
Mechanic mike> I thought you would have
identified this immediately...what gives?
